I'm considering taking a hagwon position for my first teaching experience in South Korea. (I know, I know, horror stories, etc. But my recruiter for public schools is giving me the run-around, and I'm not sure there even is an interview or position open because of lack of communication on his part. Anyway...)

I have a boyfriend who lives in Europe. If I take a Hagwon position, I probably won't be able to visit him much, if at all from what I understand. How are visitors looked upon in Korea while teaching? Would it be an issue to have my boyfriend come visit me?

No reason to let your hagwon know. SK is a free country. Smile Your landlord might care if he somehow finds out you have a long term sleepover buddy of course, but I wouldn't worry about that. Most of my landlords have been cool. Have fun.

I thought apartments renters charge per-apartment, not per-person?

ofc, but if your landlord sucks they might care if they see someone they don't know about in and around their building often, over a long period of time. I'd only be concerned if you've had issues with your landlord before or something.

It's no one's business who you have in your apartment. Would you accept a boss or landlord nosing in on your personal life in your home country? If anyone gives you a hard time (I would almost be willing to bet no one will), sarcastically tell them to call the police if they're so concerned that you're doing something wrong.

Up to a point sure.

However occupancy rules & limits often apply for apt due to insurance considerations. In that sense, the landlord has the right to ask the tenants how many occupants are in the apt he owns. The tenant rents the apt and does not own it. Typically some form of lease agreement will state the allowed number of occupants. This can typically be amended if the landlord and tenants agree.

By the way we own an apt building here in Canada and the leases on all the apt include the number of occupants. This impacts insurance. If tenants want to change this, they need to notify us. This however is not the same as a landlord just showing up. That is wrong as tenants have a pvt life that deserves to be protected.

Now, if someone visits you for a short period of time, then that is really not a problem and the landlord cannot really say a thing about it.

I wouldn't mention it to your hagwon, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. Chances are you'll rarely see your landlord and if you do bump into him with your boyf, just pretend he's your cousin or brother visiting. Simple Very Happy
