I can totally relate with you on this!! I am also a very proud parent of one Very Happy

So am I...and on top of that I'm also multiethnic (I've never suffered from an existential crisis because of it...But I had the good fortune of growing up in a multicultural society).

And to the OP...Dude, would it have killed you to say instead that you're with your current girlfriend because you like her and you have a lot in common?

Koreans love those loaded questions where you're forced to choose between either lying to protect their fragile sense of national self-esteem or telling the truth and having them hate you.

Alas it never pays anywhere on Earth to have your boss or co-workers hate you.

"Foreign women love Korean men because they are so masculine and handsome. Don't you agree?"

"Which Korea food do you like more? Neng Myun, or Bibimbap?"

"Do you know Korean parents love their children more than the foreigner parent?"

Blah blah blah. Gotta pick and choose your battles. It's the game we play. Like when a student asks you if the Dokdo belong the Korea or the Japan. Just nod and smile, as you would a homeless person ranting about the end of the world. Don't rock the boat. Take your pay check whilst calling them a *beep* under your breath and count down the days until you can be on a crystal clean white beach in the Philippines, lying in the sun, smoking hot local bird in a bikini beside you passing you San Migs. That's the shit.

I think that a few people at schools "skew" some foreigners perceptions and expectations.

I can somewhat relate to this. My first school, the owner went out of her way to welcome us... but she also hyped Korea quite a bit. "Jeju is like Hawaii!", "Koreans love foreigners!" "Korea has... "

Kind of the typical stuff that you hear on these boards.

In a way, it made me excited to be living here, but after a bit, I realized that it was a lot of hype. I shrugged it off, and moved on. Some people though seem to be really focused on it.

Koreans sometimes don't do themselves any favours when it comes to the idea of racial harmony though. There still seems to be a strong belief amongst the people that they are almost a separate race of beings, quite unique to other humans.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I participated in a market research focus group session, that was trying to figure out foreigners' perception of Korea. The guy asking the questions was a prominent Korean academic figure, and he was spouting some serious bilge. One point that he contended was that because the Korean Olympic archers won gold, then that must mean all Koreans have an eye for detail. I know that people on here make rash generalisations about Koreans, but I expected more from a highly educated person like him.

There's plenty of things I like about Korea.

But I don't include racism, closed mindedness, poor hygiene, the bastardized, bullying version of confucianism that has taken root, bumping into people, spitting, farting at the dinner table, aggressive nationalism, poor driving and old men ranting and raving like buffoons in the category of things I like. Do you?

Also I'm not "here". I'm now "there". And happier for it.

But thanks for asking.

Kisses.

Alas it never pays anywhere on Earth to have your boss or co-workers hate you.

"Foreign women love Korean men because they are so masculine and handsome. Don't you agree?"

Well, that's a bit of a blanket statement. I'm never asked those questions, but that's probably because I don't work with the immature 20-something or the under-educated.

Not a blanket statement. It happens in all cases. Ever. It's a current K-Borg model factory fault. Maybe yours have a virus or something.

Captain, I understand a bad work situation can skew perspective and taint the experience. In fact, we have all seen it or perhaps experienced some of it. Still, what I was refering too is the nearly demented paranoia fueled fantasy some are on that paints Korea and Koreans as some sort of anti-foreigner conglomerate out to get whitey. I mean this constant adverserial "us vs them" attitude that some have just puzzles me. Things like "oh you know KOREANS ask LOADED questions, they wish to trap you". Seriously now, this is either hilarious or deeply sad...

See "k-borg" post above, classic example. Laughing Guess one has to take it as entertainement.

I get where he's coming from totally. I've worked in a lot of countries but the sheer predictability of the questions/comments you get here surpasses any other I've worked in.
