Stop looking at entry-level jobs would seem to be the solution here.

You're missing the point.

What I'm saying is that esl salaries have barely moved in the past decade.

I don't doubt there are uni jobs paying more than 2.1M, (although many actually pay the same as hogwons) - or that you can earn more by suplementing your income with extra work.

But we're talking about base salaries here. The overwhelming majority of eslers in Korea get paid around the same: 2.1M, across the board, and have done for the past decade. The overwhelming majority of jobs are entry level.

You seem to think there is some sort of career ladder here. Please enlighten us.

1- 2.1 for a university is not the same as 2.1 for a hakwon. Typically university jobs require lower hours and offer more vacation.

2- ENTRY LEVEL wages have stagnated and in some cases decreased since 2008. However, lots of teaching jobs pay more and offer raises and incentives for qualified educators.

The point I agree with Julius is that for newbies with unrelated degrees the starting pay has decreased when compared to what a newbie would get in 2007.

As for the career ladder, it will not be rolled down to you with a personalized golden invitation but it does exist.

It's fairly obvious.

1) Find out what places in Korea pay the best salaries and have the best conditions
2) acquire experience/qualifications they require
3)get a job there
4) find out what work on the side is available
5) acquire experience/qualifications needed for it
6) do extra (legal) work on the side.
7) make a lot of money on an E2

And here is a link to the EPIK pay scale...surely you should be at least 1 or 1+ since you've been here so long.

As we see level one starts at 2.3-2.5 and goes up to 2.7 after 2 years.
Still low but quite a bit higher than the 2.1 you are claiming is the glass ceiling.

I was on level one until a recruiter threw a photo of a nubile blonde onto my principals desk back in 2009.

Nowadays such high earners survive only in remote locations in the mountains.

That payscale is mostly a figment, it exists only on paper. Like numerous things in this country, its just for show.

In reality no school or education board will pay that much for a waeguk unless thay absolutely have to. Bignoses are a dime a dozen and how much skill does it really need to simply speak your own language? At least that is the korean perception of what esl is all about.

But even the schools that do pay 2.7 haven't raised that figure for the past 8 years.
