I've been asked to travel to the ROK without a visa and then make a visa run to Osaka or somewhere in a couple of months.

Is this a common request?

Any views great appreciated.

It's not common, and illegal. You can't work without a visa, and unless they are expecting you to sit here for 2 months with no income, they're asking you to work illegally. You can probably contact immigration and get yourself a reward.

DON'T do it. If you get caught, you will have to pay a huge fine and will be deported, and barred from ever returning to Korea.

The fine would suck but the ban is no real loss.

I know people who have done it for years with no issues.

How would you get caught? Does anyone even check for this type of thing?

I disagree a bit. This is quite common. Some schools like people to come over now, then later send them on a visa trip. Yes, like alongway said it is illegal! AND the length the time of a couple months IS NOT common. Common is a week or two, maybe up to month before sending the teacher on to Japan.

Some schools do this, because well they are unprepared and do things last minute. So getting someone to come over and work under the table till they get things in order can help.

Other schools can use it as a dodge. For someone to come over and work illegally for a short while, then get rid of the teacher. Allows them to save on taxes, tickets, and such. The more time a school ask you to wait on visa trip the more likely it is not going to end well. Sort of a pump em and dump em routine. Or as a way to hire them as for probationary time. A test 'em out scheme. Which can work for or not work for expat teacher.

If you are worried about the work illegally and time period. Then do get some leverage. If they want you over right away, then they will pay for plane ticket. Make sure they at least have a place for you to stay.

Good Luck.

Shouldn't you ask for both roundtrip plane tickets if you're going to do that illegal stunt?

Why? If you're going to do a visa run to Japan why would you need return flight home?

They've never asked me at immigration for proof of onward travel.

It is common for places to ask you to work a week or so, but 2 months?

What that says to me is that the school may have some money/organizational problems. Chances of getting burnt = high.

This time scale came via the recruiter. I will query it.

I would say at least a one way ticket. Two way would prove some trust worthiness. At least with the one way, if the job explodes up, the OP could then move on to try and find a new job.

Surprised this is coming from the recruiter as the delay of visa trip can mean a delay on them getting paid. Usually a recruiter gets paid when the teacher has a visa and settled in after a month or two.

If you do go with working under the table, HOLD on to your paperwork. Do not give to the recruiter or school. Only hand it over until the employer is ready to start the application and do it in a timely matter.

As "some waygook-in" commented if a place is disorganized the chances of being burned go up. If a business is not organized enough to get a teacher, they will likely not be as good when it comes to other things like schedule or pay.

Don't come to Korea until you have multiple apostilled CBC's in hand and multiple copies of your diploma notarized and apostilled. Also have plenty of cash in hand when you come, Korea is expensive. Then come to Korea anyway you want for a while and look for other legitimate jobs.

This is a fairly common request. It is also illegal and a big, bright, red flag that you are being asked to teach illegally - and especially for a "couple of months" and not just weeks. It often ends up being longer and there are many complications and potential drawbacks in addition to the chance of being caught, fined and deported.

Just say "no" to illegal teaching. There are plenty of legal jobs.

Do not come to Korea without an E2 visa in your passport. Do not teach or agree to teach illegally.

Well, if the OP's worked in Korea before then it's a non-issue. If he hasn't...

You were lucky. And that luck depends on a number of factors, apparently the biggest one being the willingness of the folks conducting the plane boarding to subject their company to the risk of a fine.
