Jeeeezus! People are taking this way to seriously.
Think of it this way, any attack on another nation by Kim, ends Kim's rule. His nation will be dismantled and his time will be over. And that ends the whole Kim family line of awesomeness. He just got into power, think of all the hot chicks he can have and all the money he can blow playing king. He's not going to give up THAT awesomeness by entering into some no-win conflict.
Only if he's insane, or someone else has the real power, and they are insane. |
Exactly. Relax. Have a beer. It's all talk. |

| I've just read the OP, and I'm not sure what nonsense has been said so far, but the Non-combatant Evacuation Ops ROE state that legal permanent US residents have the same authorization to hop on a military plane as non-military-affiliated US citizens. If your wife has legal permanent resident status, then you're good to go. |

If I get a chance I will post the relevant NEO docs later, but the gist, re: pets, is that there are three possibilities -
1) pets (must be in a carrier) go with you. This is the ideal and what they hope to do, but the priority is people.
2) If the pets cannot go with you, they will follow at a later date.
3) If your pets cannot get out, the US military promises to put them down humanely.

I don't think "evacuate" is the correct word here. Unless you mean that he actually evacuated (emptied his bowels) all the way to Toronto. The literal meaning of your question is: Has anyone had any co-workers soil themselves? In which case, possibly, but nobody I know has been evacuated.
In either case, I think the correct term for what that person did is called "a runner". If they were evacuated, then it'd be with a lot of other people, and then there would be a real cause for concern.
Which brings me neatly to my final point-there's enough scare-mongering going on at the moment without adding to it with a negligent choice of phrase. I'm not a grammar nazi, and I don't want to hijack this thread, but when I saw the word "evacuate" I was genuinely worried, albeit for all of two seconds. |

According to The Oxford Dictionary, a definition of evacuate is:
1. Remove (someone) from a place of danger to a safer place
http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/evacuate
That's what the guy in Bundang did. He felt Korea is a place of danger, so he removed himself to what he believes is a safer place, Toronto.
Take a look at this article: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1346&dat=19830817&id=pftEAAAAIBAJ&sjid=pfsDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4311,562953
It says, "Lyon spent the next 22 hours on the mountain before finally being evacuated by helicopter on Wednesday morning." I don't think it means the helicopter made him soil himself. |

"Place of danger" being the actual issue.
"Perceived place of danger" is perhaps more accurate in the Bundang runner's case. |

I'm not sure what he pulled was an actual runner, and I say this as a person who definitely did a runner of my own last April. The teacher in Bundang resigned while on an F visa, and I know almost nothing about his work contract, or how much notice he was required to give if any. The usage of the word "runner" actually seems more questionable here than the word "evacuate."
Anyway, I didn't mean to confuse or scare people. To clear things up, the foreign teacher went to his homeland because of the situation involving North Korea. I was just wondering if anyone else had any co-workers who are leaving or had left for the same reason. |

I worked for the Australian government when we evacuated people out of Lebanon during a conflict with Israel. We evacuated people using ships, which took Australian citiizens, their partners and children to a nearby safe port, where they were further evacuated to Australia by air.
I figure with the South's relative naval strength, this option would be the most likely (not that I believe that there will be a conflict/evacuation any time soon). The issues that we had in Lebanon were that Israeli jets were bombing roads to the port cities and they refused to guarantee the safety of the ships doing the evacuation.
It's fair to say that IF anything were to happen, then there truly would be no safe way out...even if North Korea didn't get all nuke happy. |
That was nice of you. I remember a Lebanese-Ozzie mate of mine from Sydney telling me about that. He said the Aus govt was too nice because most of those Lebanese were dual citizens for passport and tax benefits and didn't give a damn about Australia as they spent most of their time outside it.
Yet when the Israelis came they screamed that they were Australians and the govt had to do everything to get em out. They were supposed to pay their way out or pay back the Aus govt but to this day millions of dollars have been non paid back. Oh yeah, and a lot of those people are now.......living in Lebanon.
Meanwhile the Aus govt employs mostly Koreans at the Aus embassy in Seoul and the Korean Embassy and Consulate in Aus wouldn't dream of employing a non Korean or non Korean ethnicity person. Sounds like the Aus govt needs to look after its own better. |

| For the first time today I saw the word "evacuate" used in the media. However the statement was "we are monitoring developments on the Korean peninsula closely but at this stage we are not considering any plans to evacuate". |

And CNN will report this as "today government officials discussed evacuation for the first time since the crisis began." |

In other words, they will shoot your dog as your plane taxis down the runway. |

I have an American friend married to a Korean. She checked with the embassy and apparently her husband would not be evacuated because he hasn't gotten a green card yet, and only spouses with green cards will be evacuated.
That said, I really really really don't think it will come to evacuation, and even the US embassy just issued a statement recently that nothing has changed in security levels and evacuation isn't being considered right now. I'm not a North Korean expert, though, and I can understand that with a pregnant wife you'd be thinking about the just in case scenarios.
I think the best thing to do would be to contact the US embassy and double check. |

RU freaking serious? the US military is going to evacuate every foreigner from korea, regardless of nationality, but they won't take the korean spouses of US citizens? and how many korean spouses of US citizens in korea right now already have their greencard? maybe a few visiting relatives?LOL the green card is for people that LIVE in the US. there is no "haven't gotten a green card yet" scenario for korean spouses of US citizens in korea. once they grant you a marriage visa you've got like 3 months to move to the US or lose it. and the green card is for foreigners who have already lived in the US a long time. i think you must have your terms confused. i think what you probably mean is your friend who considers herself married to a korean because they had a ceremony can not have him evacuated because either 1.they haven't reported their marriage to the US embassy or maybe even 2.they haven't even filled out the forms in korea to be legally married. or 3.they won't evacuate korean men married to US citizens because they WILL BE DRAFTED. |
I'm just saying what my friend told me. She said green card. She said that it's only citizens and residents of the US, and her spouse is currently neither. I'm not saying that this is 100% accurate information because it's based on what I heard from her, and I haven't called the embassy to double check. I can tell you that they had a proper wedding and have submitted all required paperwork. So your three guesses are not what I mean based on what I've heard from her. But again, I don't work for the US embassy. And yes, it does seem ridiculous to me. |
