i bought my windows 7 online some time ago, all legit and paid for. i did the windows 8 evaluation copy for several months then they (them not us) told me to buy it, windows 8. so, i replied 'no.' reinstalled my windows 7, now my screen is black and i keep getting the annoying message reading: you may be a victim of counterfeit...upgrade now for $200.! counterfeit my lily white ass! a victim of micro-rip-off, perhaps... Evil or Very Mad

please tech-nerds, there be any way i can get rid of the black screen and annoying begging messages for money? Sad

Two options....

Contact Microsoft support. They will give you a new install key.

Download WAT remover and run it. It will disable the WGA nags but you can only do updates by auto update and not manually. It will also set off your "antivirus" when you run it since it is disabling part of your "windows" software. After that you will never hear from it again.

If it's the upgrade version of Windows 7, and not the full edition, when you first installed it, it looked for your previous version of windows and accepted it.

Unfortunately, with the Windows 8 evaluation, it is not considered a legitimate upgrade path. The workaround to this, other than the WAT remover, is to install it twice. The first time you install it, skip typing in the product id and don't activate. Now when you install it the second time, the windows installer sees Windows 7 and considers it a qualifying upgrade. It's a pain, yes, but if you use the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and install windows 7 on a usb key, it should only take 10-15 minutes to install it each time.

Edit: With the WAT remover, do NOT install Windows Genuine Advantage tool in Windows update. It's a monthly update. Make sure you uncheck it, then hide it from future updates. Otherwise, you will get that black screen again and will have to install the latest version of WAT remover.

Edit 2: I meant the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, not Genuine Advantage tool

And now your windows install is as legit as any old copy downloaded off Piratebay... Hawhawhaw. Way to go Microsoft.

Do you mean the Malicious Software Removal Tool, or the WAT remover? I made a mistake when I said Windows Genuine Advantage Tool. If you reinstalled Windows after you installed the WAT remover, you don't need to worry. It's gone.

Embarassed please, wattaya think? should i locate the Malicious Software Removal Tool and send that bad puppy packing? Confused

You need to find Windows Update in the Control Panel. I can't remember where it is in Windows 7 (I have 8 installed), but it should be in System and Security. Once you go there, first go to change settings in the left column. Change from Automatic Updates to Check for Updates. You need to do this because the Malicious Software tool is an important update and it will automatically install it every month, forcing you to install a new version of WAT remover every month.

Once you do that, when you install your updates, you will have to manually search the update list, right click Malicious Software, and click Hide Update. You will need to do this every month, or install WAT remover every month. Your choice.

props singerdude. im thinking about converting to Mac and giving my desktop to charity. i wanna upgrade it to a full version of windows 8 firstly, tho.

is your win8 legit, dude? is it all paid for and worth the coin you dished out? alternatively, is yours a download n hacked copy? is that operating sans pain-in-the-ass? where did you get it? from a website? which site? any problems with installation? are you really a dude or is that username just a ploy to lead readers astray? Confused

please, pray tell? i need to know...

Yes, I am, and also my Windows 8 is legit. I bought it for $40 while Microsoft was having a special price. Unfortunately, it expired Jan. 31.
