What exactly is the rule for lunch and break times at a hagwon? Is it 10 minutes every hour for a break, and 30 minutes once a day for lunch? Or something along those lines?

Is "prep time" considered the recess period, or is that considered working time?

Does the 30 minutes include the 5 minute breaks between classes?

The school I am at is short on employees, so I am working 7 classes in row. Another teacher is doing 8 45 minute classes in a row.

The 4 hour rule is negotiable. Typically, you do 40-45 minute classes with at least 10 minutes in between. The guideline I follow is the school can schedule any block of 3-4 classes in a row, two times a week. This means one block in the morning and one block in the afternoon.

After that, there needs to be some off the contract arrangements you agree to on a case by case basis. Also, living arrangements should be considered. If you live further away from school, you probably don't want to go back home and return for just one class. However, if you live on campus or across the street, then you can easily do 5 classes and then come back later to do 1 if they want.

In your case, I would look at how the classes are arranged. You said you have 7 classes, but does this mean you teach 3 and then lunch and then 4 more? Where are these 7 classes in the day? Following my guideline you could do 3-4 classes and then take a break and do 3-4 more.

If it is a situation where they have too many students (usually same age level too) then they need another teacher which you already mentioned. It's that simple. They should be looking for other students, maybe adult classes, and schedule you to work more this way.

3 teachers could do 3 classes and 2 adults to get 15 instead of 2 teachers trying to figure out how to do 7 or 8 classes at only one period of the day. In the end, it's not your problem.

If you enjoy the same group of students and don't mind the overtime, count how many total classes you teach. If it is over 25/week start asking for overtime.

In my experience, trying to get exact with details like this will get you in trouble and sour relations with your boss. You are right, but you are also 'wrong'.

If it gets ridiculous, like 8 classes in a row with hardly time to taka a piss, by all means, speak up.

If you had to ask about your breaks at work, you don't wanna work there very long.

Then again, I might accept less breaks and an equal amount of class time if I got to go home a little earlier.

OP, are you willing to post your class schedule?
