Keep an eye on this.

A parliamentary subcommittee has passed a bill to guarantee another holiday when a national holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday, both ruling and opposition party members said.
The Security and Public Administration Committee of the National Assembly will review the bill later and seek approval at a plenary session.
For instance, this years Childrens Day falls on May 5, which is a Sunday. If the bill passes before that day, another holiday will be given on Monday.
However, it may take time until the bill is finally passed amidst opposition from the government and business groups. They are concerned that extended holidays could adversely affect economic activities.
It is clear that an increased number of holidays with the introduction of alternative holiday system will damage competitiveness of our companies severely, said the Korea Employers Federation in a statement.
However, unionists welcomed the move to compensate for lost holidays and expect it to reduce Koreas notorious long working hours.
We expect that implementing the alternative holiday system can help boost living standards of workers who have been tired of long working hours, said the Federation of Korean Trade Unions in a statement.

If this bill passes children won't be in school and hogwans as much.
This time spent on frivolous activities when they could be studying......on and on it goes. |

Of course, as it concerns most of us in the school/uni system, that means we will have to make these days up at the end of the semesters. We can easily have classes through Xmas in the fall and until the end of June in the spring. |

Thrylos, might be a bit of a downer for those in the Uni system with their long vacations (or the few PS teachers who get full vacations). For everyone else it's a huge benefit. Realistically, it will probably only lead to 3-4 extra Holidays per year (I don't think they'll roll it over with Holidays like Chuseok, meaning if it falls on Sat-Mon, you get Tuesday too). In the case of 2013, it will lead to 1 extra holiday (provided it's passed within 2 weeks).
Looking at my calender, if the school's summer vacation starts one day later, it won't mean any difference in my book (I'll still get my allocated vac days, and I'll probably still have a week's worth of deskwarming), yet having the chance of an extra 3-day weekend a few times a year will be great. |

This might have a fair chance of success if certain business groups who make money off of leisure days give it some backing.
Can you imagine if the day after St. Patrick's and the Super Bowl was a national holiday? The beer lobby would be all over that.
Just turn those days into something like Black Friday and rake in the loot. |

Sure, more days off. At the expense of more hours daily no doubt. My school has instituted a daily, seventh period this year. |

I believe that Children's Day is the only remaining holiday this year that falls on a weekend. |

Don't know what schools you've been at. But in all of my schools the semester ends July 20-ish and December 31-ish. |

This is awesome, I really hope it passes. We have the potential for two extra holidays this year with Hanguel Day being a holiday again. |
