The best way to enjoy whiskey is to put it on the rocks
and savor it like a fine wine.

Most serious whisky aficionados would disagree with both those statements.

BTW, I believe... to each his own. If you love JW and enjoy whisky on the rocks, more power to you.

If we got enough people, we could go down to that whiskey show in Feb.
I was looking at it online. I'll try to get a price on some tickets if anyone is
interested.

Kombey! (Cheers)

Tickets for the NY event are usually pricey and hard to come by, but it seems like the Korea event is more reasonable, starting at 40k for entry level access with advanced purchase.

On the rocks is not "the" best way. It's one way to enjoy whisky. It depends on the kind, and type. Generally for mid - high level whisky there's two ways on the rocks or sipping straight. While it's recommended that high quality whisky like JW blue level or above should be sipped straight, a lot of people find it a bit strong and like to put an ice cube to help dilute it slightly. Mid-level whisky or whisky's that are oaky or peaty i recommend on the rocks because it helps to slowly unlock the smokey flavor. JW black is best this way.

And seriously can we not do the "which liquor is better" immature argument thing?

Dear whiskey geniuses:

What's a decent whiskey readily available in KR at a fair price? Something to keep around the house and drink on the rocks?

What is this "Scotch Blue" stuff, which apparently is a big deal here? Legit or a bastardization?

I got converted to whiskey in one of those Korean "business" rooms with some K-buddies. But they were buying absurdly expensive stuff to impress the ladies, I don't really need to go all crazy like that, just something tastey.

Help a brother out, I come from the sad land of BEER so know nothing of this whiskey business...

Here's what you need to know about whisky.

Whiskey is the Irish spelling, Whisky is the Scottish spelling. If you want a good whisky you look for a Scottish single malt.

Stuff like Jamieson is often available in bars and seen on tv shows but it is an Irish whiskey which in all honesty is a bit shit.

For some decent stuff in Korea go to Costco and buy the Macallan. It's a decent single malt which isn't too expensive.

Don't drink it with ice cubes. Only posers do this. If you need to dilute the whisky you should use room temperature water. Cold water or ice cubes lower the temperature of the whisky and tends to hide some of the flavours. Room temperature allows the whisky to breathe and release it's flavours. Some whisky needs a little water to make it more enjoyable. Judge for yourself.

Scotch Blue is made specifically for Koreans. My piss would taste better than that after a night drinking decent whisky. Avoid it and laugh in the face of people who think it's a quality tipple. It's the Cass of the whisky world.

Here's a freebie to make you look cool in front of your friends. "Talisker had a good rep but recently have been damn inconsistent, don't you think? I'm still trying to get my hands on an Old Pulteney to see if it's as good as they say."

Enjoy your whisky, and don't do shots of a single malt. You should take your time with a decent whisky.

Thanks for the tips!

Well I tried Johnnie Walker Black Label last night (cause the internet said it was a good starting place for noobs). The internet also told me how to drink it out of a fancy glass and "nose it". Hmmm, I dunno. JW seemed sort of harsh. For some reason the whisky I had with my friends seemed so smooth and textured. I should ask them what the hell we were drinking.

Yeah, the store had Macallan...should try that next.

I'm not a fan of Johnnie Walker and I especially don't like Diageo. They have taken what used to be some great whisky distilleries and encourage them to churn out inconsistent crap (see Talisker from my previous post). From what I remember Black Label is a blend and with the lack of care Diageo seems to take it's no wonder it is not a particularly good whisky. Maybe a bit of water would make it more palatable.

Remember - try to buy single malts. Don't be afraid to add water.

You guys may go crazy, given your fine tastes and all...but what do you think of White Castle?

Just back from the Philippines, while sitting by the pool I asked the girl to make me a local whiskey, ice, a little water. Expected it to be horrible, actually it was quite tasty. Picked up a couple bottles for $6USD each. Tested them here in Seoul without the sun and pool, yep still tasty.

Honestly I like the taste better than Black Label at $40. It tastes mellow, not so much like gasoline.

Thoughts?
