Yeah, kind of stupid they don't sell fire alarms here.

Except they do. Two posts above yours Costco was mentioned.

WTH do people think smoke detectors are gonna do? They'll only work from within your apartment... this fire was not in the girls apartment.

My condolences to her family. Horrific thing to happen.

The smoke came into her apartment though, and a smoke detector could/should have warned her of the danger before it became dangerous.

In answer to Steelrails:

What good is a smoke detector if it goes off 3 times a week for benign reasons?

Presumably your average person would know the difference between it going

off while cooking vs going off at 2:00 am when you are in bed.

Did the smoke enter her apartment? Most apartments, including mine, have those heavy metal doors designed specifically to prevent that from happening.

How did she get such bad internal burns? I've never heard of the like.

The reporting is not very clear as to what happened, but it would seem that the burns were caused by the inhalation of hot gasses and smoke.

A horrible tragedy. My condolences go out to her family.

A smoke detector, if working properly would have warned her well before

the gasses and smoke had reached such dangerous levels.

It isn't clear from the reports if she stayed in her apartment or if she

did try to escape, but either way, a smoke detector could have prevented

this tragedy.
