animal abuse seems to be cuturally accepted. |

Funny how they get 'offended' by a wink or Bill Gate's handshake. But hang a dog from a tree and break out the blowtorch and nobody blinks.
They really need to re-evaluate what causes them offence. |

Yes, there continues to be a lot of animal abuse going on in Korea. There are also more support groups for animals, and many, many more Koreans speaking out for animal rights, compared to even a mere five years ago. Things are getting better. |

There are more than a few Koreans involved in trying to help the plight of poor animals, and foreigners living in Korea can also help by volunteering... www.animalrescuekorea.org/animal-shelters
Also, the Seoul Veggie Club (originally started as a social group to aid expat vegetarians in South Korea) now has a lot of Korean members, many of whom are involved in animal rights issues...

so youn park has been in the news a fair bit lately in korea. she caused quite a rumpus last year when she walked onto some farm and rescued the dogs. you can follow/support her on Facebook.
koreans are getting a bit more educated about animal abuse but they still have a long way to go. i think the pig incident helped a lot after the international press that got. it made Koreans on the whole look like barbarians. there was a docu on tv about it agin last week and alot of people seemed to be condemning it, so it still hasn't gone away.
in fairness though, they cant treat other humans with respect a lot of the time, so theyre not doing too badly. relatively.
and heres a nice pic of two dogs being tied up by their necks and a petition,

Whining about it on the internet, perhaps signing some lame petition, and continuing to eat animals and ignorantly buy products that have been tested on animals seems to be par for the course for a lot of people. |

The live pig getting ripped in half a few years ago was one of the most vile things I've ever seen. |

And what is up with all of these dogs with their ears and tails dyed different colors and wearing clothes? I have even seen quite a few wearing little shoes. This is just plain . |

What about NETs which packed dogs in small cages then stick them in a dark cold hold of an airplane and fly them thousands of miles to a totally new location that is confusing to the animal and may expose them to diseases that they have not encountered. |

Not to mention all of those fenced-in dog parks and dog-friendly outdoor cafes that they'll encounter. The horror!
On a related note, if the dog is small enough (5-10kg) some airlines will let you keep it in the cabin with you. We're hoping to be able to do that when we leave Asia. |

Yes those wonderful dog friendly patios with the divine scent of canine urine and excretement wafting in the air. Lovely. |

Rollo...you are soooo off-base with your thoughts on pet travel and outdoor cafes...I won't even start.
Unless you're trolling; I hope so because then my opinion of you (fairly good, and you post quite often on many topics) won't be completely shot. |

Janny , the last time i was i the states,I went to my favorite bistro. Nice place, nice patio. It was a sunny day so I decided to take my beverage out to the patio. The first thing was the overpowering smell of dog feces. The a fight between two dogs led to a woman being bitten. Just an awesome experience.
Dogs often die from the experience of being packed in the cargo hold of airplanes.
The thought of a yapping dog in the cabin with me on a long flight, right up there with a root canal.
Inflicting your loud and often odorous animal on others, without their consent is rude and crude. As bad as the family with the totally obnoxious kid, who's disruptive behaior Mom and Dad find cute.
I do realize that most of the people who treat dogs as if they are humand anthromorphize their behavior are people who are cut off from nature, live in cities and seldom get in to the woods or interact with any animals but domestic ones. Love your dog, but treat it as a dog and dont assume it is enjoying being in a dog friendly cafe for two hours. It would probaly be happier running free some where. |

I agree that pets should be given a life that closely resembles that of a natural animal; whatever the natural happy state of that animal may be. Dogs should be outside with lots of companionship. Cats should have a territory it can patrol and some hunting opportunities.
I don't like the idea of dog cafes and bell collars and doggie coats.
Your thoughts are quite narrow on this. Your bad experience with an outdoor cafe does not make most outdoor pet-friendly patios shitty.
I have never heard an in-cabin animal (dog or cat) during a flight. (I have taken countless overseas flights, including one with my cat in the cabin, under the seat. ) They are usually too scared to make noise. If noise was an issue, airlines would not allow it.
Very few pets die in the cargo space during the flight. It is climate-controlled and there are pet containers on many transoceanic flights. Of course it is hard for the pet, but the improved life on the other side makes up for the temporary terror, no?
If MOST of the animals died on these flights, would the owners take the chance? No.
Anyway, this thread is about animal abuse in Korea. |
