I've been here for six years and I keep on reading all the complaints about how Koreans are racists and how badly they treat us poor helpless foreigners. Enough already!!! Wake up idiots!!!! The only reason they can get away with it is because we let them. Don't put up with the crap at your job, on the subway, on the street, in your apartment building. If somebody disses you back home, what do you do? Just sit there like a retard with a big stupid grin on your face? No, you'd probably say something back or fight back or do something other than complain about it. So why is it any different here? Don't be so scared, stand up for your rights, don't buy into the Korean myths and drama; be yourself, fight for your right. I get sick and tired of hearing all these whiners complaining about how this guy looked at me wrong and this director didn't pay me and this girl didn't want to dance with me and she go giggly giggly goo goo goo because she no speakee Englishee he he he. The people of this country have huge inferiority complex and don't like foreigners in general, don't take things so seriously, have some fun with these clowns, they think they are the only homogenous society out there. They think no gays live in this country. They think foreigners all have diseases and drugs. They have more prostitution here than anywhere else and they act like it doesn't exist, they have one of the highest rising divorce rates in the world, they stand in line for hours trying to immigrate to other countries. Why the hell do you guys care what these retards think? Stop worrying about them and their ways. They are meaningless and don't worry about them, live your life, enjoy your time here, get a few laughs from them, but don't stress yourselves out so much by these guys, it's not worth the headache, it can be good for a lot of laughs however. I think your comments are racist. If you have poor experiences you can hardly address the causes by being just as bloody minded in return. It might make you feel equal or better but it relly does nothing except get you more disliked than you think you are already. There are ways of 'getting back' at people without resorting to comments like 'they have more prostituion here than anywhere else...' or '.do you care what these retards think', or 'these people have a huge inferiority complex.' What ?

You seem to say a lot about standing up for your rights - (which is a good thing) how about your rights for getting your last 6 years salary?

Yesterday,

That was quite a stroll down memory lane. I hadn't realized I'd posted that many times. Well as you may have guessed by now, the Beast enjoys his soju and sometimes has been known to tell a tall tale or two. Six years without pay, wow! How did the Beast ever manage to survive? Anyways, I do stand by what I wrote in this column however, far too many whiners around and in most cases they create their own misery. As to being called a racist, well yes you are probably right. I think everyone is to some degree. Koreans are very racist. Would it be acceptable in your country to not allow foreigners into certain establishments? I guess when you are predjudiced against like that for a number of years, some of it wears off on you.

I read his comment on the other post and deducted that as being sarcasm. Maybe I missed something.

I thought he joined in Jan 2003, unless it's been revealed on another thread of his that this is not the case. (Sorry, but the OP doesn't like paragraphs and my eyes are too tired).

Whenever someone draws reference to another members register date and post count, rather than the merits of their post, it makes it look like you couldn't mount an appropriate and engaging retort and makes your position appear weaker.

Just like when a member resorts to referring to anothers spelling and grammar in a post.

Personally, if the OPs first post bothers you enough to respond to it, I think there is enough meat in it for you to mount an effective response. Don't sell yourself short by lowering yourself to debate register dates, post counts, and post history. You're better than that.

Personally, my only observation that I have on the OP, is that he underscores the mystery of why certain people stay here for 5+ years and have nothing but contempt to show for it. I think it's safe to conclude that those people are part of a large part of the human race that will complain anywhere and about anything. I've met them, you've met them, we've all met and worked with them. My jobs back home, yes, some were there. Some of my old roommates. Hell, even some our friends and maybe family members. Complaining about Korea is not a Korea-centric issue. It's a personal issue. If it wasn't, then we would all share the same viewpoint and be in agreeance with each other. You don't see that on this board.

But the OP seems to need to spend 6 years in a place that he can complain about, perhaps in effort to draw his attention away from the real issues that may bother him inside. The world, not just Korea, has all sorts.

Actually - before i reply to anyones message or thread - i usually check out the person "past and previous" messages first - to decide if what I wish to say is appropriate to that person or not" or whether I should or should not reply - or if I should take a more kinder approach -

Actually I agreed with most of the things BEAST wrote - however I had already checked out his/her history and was really curious about a couple of things such as the 6-year-history with no pay - the "only-16 posts" etc - and I was happy when Beast replied and told me - he probably spends most of his time drinking soju - a good past-time - I do the same however I drink "Sansachin" a little more expensive - and I have also been here 4 years - but only joined this site earlier this year..... (I had also contemplated whether he was very altruistic and had been volunteer-teaching for the last 6-years - of which he would have earnt my respect....

So chronicpride don't mistake me - but Beast seems to have already answered my reply - of which he/she gave a logical answer, and doesn't really need another "big-brother" to come along answer my query and wipe-his/her-butt for him/her.......

He's right there. I have put so many people in check here. Usually, all it takes is a little Excuse me, please don't do that.... Unless they get nasty, then the gloves come off. Strangely, no one cuts me off at the bank or post office anymore, no one rams me hard on the street. Be active and stop the abuse.

Yes, stop whining. Do something about it. Be nice until it is not time to be nice anymore.

beast wrote:

They do. I have been to many other countries and it is so easy to make Koreans double-check themselves, many times I make them feel bad without doing so intentionally. Their egos are delicate. So I'm careful, but I also use it as a weapon against those who use and abuse.

beast wrote:

Yes, stop. You will be much happier ignoring the staring and the laughing. Let them laugh, get your paycheck and then go home. Or stop and talk to them and see if you can't change their mind about you.

Obviously, something or someone made this guy go off. But he has a point. The stuff can get to you. People can say all the nice things about Koreans that they want, but about half the Koreans on the street either stare, make some comment, or glare, or whatever. They shouldn't kiss ass, but they should treat foreigners better than they do. We do contribute positively, don't we? Otherwise, Korea will pay when foreigners stop coming here. And they already are.

Maybe I've not been here that long but I've not encountered that many Koreans staring at me or laughing at me wherever I am. Most Koreans I've met so far have been very helpful and smiling and have more patience than most. As one of a tiny minority of westerners who is bound to encounter the novelty factor I expect the ocassional glare or even remark but I think many claims here are totaly exagerated and that it is you who have the inferiority complex. Hogwan owners may be a breed of their own, but there is little point in descending to racist remarks and then defending those remarks by saying they're justified because Koreans are racist. It is right of course to defend yourself fully or comment back if someone mistreats you but to pretend this is some kind of unique place where only foreigners get mistreated and are easy targets is total delusion. I've never yet seen a bar where foreigners are not allowed either. I would suggest that the beast has underlying reasons for his comments and maybe he should confront those instead of shouting his head off.

Okay guys,

I read all your comments and everyone has their own take. Actually, nothing made me "go off" it was just that I was reading all the postings and the vast majority are from people complaining about this or that. The thing is you can't expect to change a two thousand or three thousand year old culture and way of thinking so you might as well go with the flow and get a few laughs out of it instead of fighting it.

I find that laughter is the best medicine and I laugh all the time at their little predjudices and idiosyncrasies. That is what makes the experience so fun here. It's different. If it wasn't so different it wouldn't be half as fun to be here. My point was simply, don't complain how they are, just accept it and find some humor in the situation. Also, don't be a pushover and let them have their way with you.

As far as being a racist, well I got told off here that harboring racist views simply because I've been predjudiced against is wrong and doesn't make me a better person. Yes, that's what my mother always taught me too. And she and all of you have a point. Saying that they have a ton of prostitution here or that they won't let foreigners into certain places isn't really racist in my opinion. It's just stating the obvious. Some fellow wrote that he's never seen a place here that won't allow foreigners in.....well that's a whole new category, there are many such places here. It goes both ways however, some places won't allow Korean men in either.

The whole point I was trying to make was that if you live here, you have to find a way to cope with the absurdities that go on everyday here. Instead of getting mad and complaining or whining about it, find some fun in it. It makes life a whole lot easier here when you can laugh at things instead of cry about them. That's all guys.

You're right to a certain extent, but I live in an area where there are few foreigners. Sometimes, the Korean I have learned has helped diffuse a lot of bombs. I live near a rural community and distrust of foreigners runs high here. Many people here are just not friendly at all, they sneer and laugh when I walk into a business and even though I speak some Korean, they make fun of the little Korean that I know. Or they kavetch that I don't speak enough Korean, while they can't speak a word of English. I can't mind my own business many times because they will walk right around me, blatantly stare as I pay for stuff, make fun of me if I use small bills or change, or give me a hard time. High school kids smirk and start saying shite. They are looking at me, and weren't smirking beforehand, so I know that it is me. Other people follow me into buildings, trying to see where I am going. At the bank, especially when I want to change money, some of the bank employees make snide remarks with the customers and laugh at me because I can't speak enough Korean. That REALLY pisses me off! Evil or Very Mad I speak fluent Chinese, plus read and write. Then they jab me because I can't speak Japanese. I learned some in a recent trip to Japan. I go back and speak enough and they finally shut their fucking mouths. I come out of the bank drenched in sweat. Others are polite, but aloof. There are kind people, but they sometimes have bad days. I mean really, how much is one person supposed to take?? It is a hard existence to lead. I can't stand it anymore. I don't know if it is racism, but it is definitely discrimination, stalking and harrassment. I like this country, but Koreans make it tough to like them.

It seems the rural areas may be a-lot different. I think you are courageous going into banks and the like when you can't speak the lingo fully. So far in Seoul I have not had any of the problems you speak of and I always avoid going places where fluent Korean is expected. I reckon I'd need someone with me who speaks Korean. Fortunately my body language is pretty good and they and I can grasp what we both mean when in shops and restaurants. I sympathise with you and it's not nice when people do that sort of thing but maybe you shouldn't try as hard. If you make it obvious you are just a dumb foreigner who can't speak Korean you might get people actually helping you instead of pointing the finger. I know it sounds harsh but it's kinda strange how the human mind works.
