Westerners know of only two Koreans, both chubby clowns. One keeps threatening to inflict a nuclear holocaust on the United States. The other rides an imaginary horse and advocates the torture death of American families. The latter has been named tourism ambassador.

hello kitty is the tourist ambassador for taiwan i think, for the usa its either mickey mouse or michael jackson. don't know about the other countries... |

For some reason, some of ya'll like to put Korea on this pedestal. Probably because you live here. But I mean, do some of you really care that Psy was appointed some stupid title?
Does anyone here actually check who the tourism ambassador is of a country before they visit? |

This is what really bothers me about the way Korea is presented to foreigners. Given the numerous scandals involving drunken and ill mannered visitors to the country do they really think it's a good idea to advertise Korea as a country to come party? I come here and get soju shoved in my face on a regular basis, and then I get told how obnoxious foreigners behave when they visit Korea. Now they are going to start pushing this as the place for heavy drinkers to come have a good time. |

I was with you on this until they gave him this title, that pretty much makes it official to me. It's not offensive to all Americans, but it's really offensive to a lot of Americans. South Korea is pretty sensitive about how it gets treated and represented by other countries so I would think the government would show a little more respect. I won't place the blame on the average Korean that doesn't grasp the English language because they won't know how half-hearted his apology was. I think this is a pretty big PR mistake, when I watch PSY's interviews I can tell he has an edge that won't go down well over the long run. He's got the attitude of a spoiled rich kid.
I could think of tons of less famous but more presentable and diplomatic Koreans that could have taken his place. Kim Yuna or Rain would have been perfect. Rain gave up his career to serve in the military while PSY shirked it. Now Rain is getting bashed for visiting his GF while serving, and PSY has been turned into a national treasure. The irony. This is sending a pretty bad message to the younger Koreans out there, and it's not going to reflect well on Korea as a whole. I just watched his newest video and it really is just flaunting the worst aspects of Korean culture. |

I think you care way too much about some irrelevant title. |
Tell me how much I care? All you know at this point is I invested about 10 minutes of my day to post a comment on a forum. It's sad when the only defense some people have to offer on an online forum is that the opposing side of an argument cares too much and shouldn't take the time out of their day to post on an online forum. Just avoid any topics about PSY if you think they are that insignificant, if you care as much as I do, then feel free to continue the conversation.
As far as the scandals go, just give me a break. Do you even teach english here? It's a prevalent stereotype of foreigners that is both encouraged and at the same time despised in Korea. |

I didn't say to stop posting, I just said that you just seem to know a lot of gossip about Rain and Psy. And when you say scandal, I assumed you meant a scandal involving famous people, not English teachers going out for a drink and getting in to trouble. Calm down. |

Hey look, another bash thread!
Great fun, it had been a while, like 5 minutes since one of these popped on the boards!
Great to see the thread sliding from its initial post and into a more general "lets vent about anything we dislike about Korea" fest.
Always good for a fun read.
Oh and tourism ambassador....you guys realize this is not a real "ambassador" position right? You do realize it is just fluff marketing to boost tourism right?
Oh wait no nevermind that was too complex. |
