|
|
My sister will be in the US for a few months, near Washington DC, and I plan on going there and then to Cuba.
What is the cheapest way to get to Cuba from the US? (I know there's no direct flight now, and I reckon going to Vancouver or Toronto is the best option?) |

Via Mexico or Canada.
via T.O. or Montreal is probably the easiest/cheapest way.
(Air Transat has flights in mid Sept (as an example) from CAD$508 (YYZ to VRA return). A.C. does the same for $530 ($560 in July).

Thanks, AT seems to have cheaper flights.
I actually ran search to Havana only, I didn't think Varadero was that cheaper! |

A cheaper way might be DC-Cancun-Cuba. Tickets between DC and Cancun are generally about the same as flights to Toronto or Montreal, and I'm guessing flights from there to Cuba are cheaper than from Canada. |

Make sure they don't stamp your passport in Cuba. The Cubans are not supposed to do that. If they do............you are in for some serious fines, big time and they are automatic. You will get a bill in the mail. Hopefully they won't ask you about the space in timing after the exit visa from Canada or Mexico. You might want to think about that too. I wonder if US immigration even checks on that. |

You're assuming he's American. I assumed he was Canadian or another nationality since he said his sister will be in the USA for a few months. |

On a side note, if traveling via Canada (NYC->Toronto/VC->Varadero), do we need to transit, pick up the bags and do check-in again, or is that all automatic?
I ask because that would require a transit visa for Canada (no visa waiver), in which case it is off |

There are no "exit stamps" from Mexico or Canada and for Americans, no entry stamps going into Canada or Mexico either.
Going from the States to Canada or Mexico then Cuba and return the same way will show NO stamps.

My US passport is proof that yes, there are entry and exit stamps for Mexico. You don't get one when you just cross over the border, but you are required to get an entry permit (and stamp) if you go 20-30 KM beyond the border.
State Dept. website
That being said, I've never had a US immigration officer look that closely at my passport and its stamps, nor heard any horror stories from anyone else. I really don't think they're pro-active about that kind of thing. |

If it is the same airline on the same ticket, it would be automatic. If different ticket, then you have to pick up the bags and check-in for the 2nd flight. |

That is how anywhere else works.
However, since Air Canada is not allowed to sell NYC->VNC->VAR return flight as a single journey, I need someone who's been to Cuba that way and knows whether they even need to go via passport control? |

Exactly. That should tell you something...
And just in case you want to be as close to 100% certain as possible, why not just call the airline up?
Or post on Lonely Planet's thorn tree. Probably have more luck there than on Dave's finding someone who has done it. |
