This sounds ridiculous but I never used an adapter for electricity or running electronics like computers, laptops etc in Japan as I bought everything like that in Japan. I worked some time ago there. Japanese mobile phones and computers were way superior to stuff I had at home.

I go off to China in the middle of June - re-signed the contract to have a later starting date as my boss has some family matters he has to return home for. This gives me time to organise a bit more and I want to know what electrical system China runs on for sure as well as checking if Japan and Korea run on the same electrical system.

I do have adapters for Korea and will be spending one week in Japan for a break before I take my flight to China. Do electrical adapters for Korea work in Japan? Is the Chinese electrical system the same as Korea's and Japan's - I'm guessing no but if my adapters for Korea work for one week in Japan then at least that's something. Thanks.

Read the plugs/labels on your electronics.

MOST travel electronics (laptops, phones, etc) are dual voltage rated 110-250 VAC - 50/60hz (but you should read the label to ensure that they are) and will work anywhere.

Most US (or Japanese) based appliances (hairdryers, curling irons, game consoles, etc) are NOT dual voltage (they are rated 100-125 VAC @ 50-60hz) and will burn out if plugged into an Asian (outside of Japan) power source.

Japan is 100 VAC but the system varies depending on the region from 50 to 60 hz. Won't matter for your hairdryer but your clock radio may run fast (or slow).

In a nutshell:
Japan 100 VAC.
Korea 240 VAC.
China 240 VAC.
US/Canada 110-125 VAC
UK 240 VAC.
