| How are you able to shop at duty free shops when you live in Korea? By having a plane ticket out of the country? When you come back to Korea, you'd have to pay a fine if you go over the duty allowance, right? If you don't, you risk having your purchases confiscated from you. I guess if you want to buy something that's quite expensive that is much cheaper at a duty free shop AND you're planning to travel soon anyway, it would be worth buying there. But I don't travel outside of Korea often, so I couldn't really take advantage of duty free shops, correct? |

You must have a passport and a plane ticket with you. I believe in order to shop at the duty free your departure must be within 30 or 60 days. I can't remember. You just can't roll up and buy stuff there if you are not traveling, in most cases your purchases must be be picked up at the airport. There are two cases when I purchased stuff at the duty free and, I was able to take them right away. 1) Louis 14th bill fold 2) A pair of Guess jeans. I still needed to show my passport and plane ticket.
All my watches, colonge, my wifes shoes, bags and, make-up had to be picked up at Incheon. After security and Immigration. The duty free pick ups are around gate 25 (I think) and the 2nd floor. Depends on what store you bought it from. |

No, as far as I can remember, you only have a duty free allowance up to $400 upon reentering Korea.

What is a "duty free allowance" here? If I wear shoes that worth $600 - do I need to declare them? |

Interesting. I wonder what would've happened had she not had the bag on her, like if she bought it on the way out of the country, gave it to a friend (perhaps as a gift) in another country, then returned to Korea. |

| Leave without a watch, come back with one on your wrist and save 300$. Leave with a cheap purse, throw it away and come back with an expensive one. I don't see how this is not obvious? |

i just picked up a ball moonphase
(http://www.ballwatch.com/html5/index.php?option=com_collections&task=1&mid=491)
at the hyundai department store in apgujeong two weeks ago. it was listed at 2.5 mil but they were running a promotion (and maybe still are) that if you used a hyundai card that they'd give you a nice discount. it ended up coming to around 2.15 after the discount. if you can't take advantage of a nice promotion like that then i think duty free might be your best bet if you want general brand-name watches.
i had to get my watch in apgujeong though because it's one of the only few places that carry ball watches in korea. tritium micro-capsules for lume are just to beautiful and nerdy for me to refuse!

this is the one i purchased. it retails for 1,999usd and can be found for around 1819usd it appears.

according to xe.com, it would convert to 2,050,212.19won so with my discount and added "korean no-reason tax" i got a relatively good deal i think. i'm definitely happy with my purchase and would recommend anyone to use that discount and purchase from the apgujeong hyundai department store. |

I'd be very careful of buying something expensive at the Duty Free Shop and bringing it back to Korea. A friend had a watch confiscated coming back to Korea because he didn't declare it. He ended up paying a fine on top of the duty...and had to hire a lawyer.
I've bought a few watches from http://www.bernardwatch.com/Tag-Heuer
There are also brand specific online watch forums which have a relationship with a few dealers of that brand. So, you can get 30% off an Omega for example. Luxury items are a ripoff here. |

Excuse me, but did he bring that watch back wearing on his wrist, or as a brand new one, in a box with receipt? |

On his wrist, with no receipt. The duty free shops report all major purchases to Korean Customs. Customs officials already had the make, model, and serial number of the watch on file. (I'm sure there is some kind of cutoff. like items below below $1,000-$1,500 are ignored.) |
