I came here in 1996 right after uni. I knew almost nothing about Korea or its culture. The only reason I came was for a job. A friend of mine worked at a hagwon. Once here I liked the party atmosphere and women. Also the exchange rate was great back then. After that I got a job in a factory and traveled a lot. I never intended to stay this long but then I started a family.

Would I do it again? No. There is a big difference between western countries and developing countries. It seems to me Korea is still in survival mode even though they make decent money. Everyone seems to out for number one to the detriment of the society in general. People don't care about garbage, laws or making their surroundings more beautiful.

Actually all kidding aside, there are more parks, more trees planted, less garbage on the street, and more people stopping at red lights when driving. I've seen quite the improvement over the last several years. I can only imagine what it was truly like here in 1996. Surprised

Do yourself and others a favor. Read up a little on what countries are considered "developed" and then rejoin the discussion.

and why dont you try using a real argument instead of lazily cutting and pasting the first thing that comes onto google as your argument. its the word of a fool that quotes wiki.
The WHO states that there are no definitions for what is the classification of a developed country.
the world bank has its own personal defenition which it uses when considering trading.

read that and then we can argue it further if you like.

I was pretending to be a super hero and pulling my jacket above my head when a freak gust of wind blew me all the way to Korea. It was pretty strange.

had i just recently graduated college with no real work experience or skills, my reply woulda been:

1. opportunity to travel the world
2. opportunity to learn about and interact with exciting new cultures
3. opportunity to expand my horizons and use my experiences to grow as an individual and as a citizen of the world

but these days, it's just

1. money
2. money
3. money

Haha! Ain't that the tragic truth.

I decided on Korea because there is a lot of work here, it's a hub to many great tourist destinations, and I always had an interest in Asia.

It's been a great experience so far!

Well guys, we found him. The only person who actually, really, genuinely thinks that South Korea is a 'developing country'. I guess, maybe he's teaching in Pyongyang and never realized that that's the North? LOL!

Ban Ki Moon as head of the U.N. security council, a female president in power, the capital city is one of the only metropoli on the face of the earth and it has one of the top two subways in the world. South Korean companies like Samsung and LG dominate global markets. I'm not sure you know what the term 'developing country/nation' means.

Are you saying Seoul is the only Metropolis on Earth? I've heard Tokyo referred to as a Megalopolis and it's a lot bigger than Seoul. Now, this is subjective, but I think Japan's subways are way better than Korea's in quality.

It's almost like... you don't understand... the term 'one of'. But... there is no way that's possible right? Right?

I went for the stunning open-mindedness and the advanced teaching
methodology. I was invited to participate in a world 1st class educational
program and learn where the West has failed.

I was not disappointed. Cool

alot of housing is of substandard quality. again its a facade.
there seem not to be very stringent controls on food hygiene in restaurants etc.

alll of these things are getting better, but its not developed. Its like saying a 7 year old child is developed.

Economically Korea is a developed country. No question about it. Unfortunately, in cultural terms it's still borders on third world. The culture (in soooo many ways) needs to catch up with the economy.

New tourist motto: "Visit Korea: The land where the 21st and 14th centuries meet."

Well, if Korea were to become an ultra-PC culture like much of the West (esp USA), then I hope to christ it doesn't change. I find the old-world cultural values meshing with the first-world economy the most fascinating thing about the place.

And who knows maybe you are the one who went to a job interview with a dirty t-shirt ... and you wanna believe that you aren't the only one. Let's end it here! it would be better.

Get that, all you tight assed malcontent grammar nazis? That you couldn't easily guess the OP was not a native speaker reveals your own ignorance on a much broader level.

I actually think KR is much more developed than the US in many ways. The US passed beyond developed into a stage of massive disfunctionality decades ago. How can you call a country that doesn't even understand the basics of human health "developed"? Look at their food industry, their health care, their police state, it's barbaric really. And in terms of culture the US has none, KR has 2000 years.

LOL. Yeah, Korea has culture. Unfortunately it's bronze age peasant culture. And how can it be more developed than the country it slavishly copied it's entire modernity from. Where's the nobel prizes? The ajoshie on the moon? The contribution to humanity's combined knowledge base. etc. etc. etc. etc....And talking about the "basics of human health". Yeah, you're right. Those stupid Americans haven't even caught onto fan death yet, or that eating cold food makes you sick.

More developed than the United States. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
