What a waste of money installing AC units. Having them there is almost fraudulent.
Reminds me of when I overtook a Porsche 911 that was going the freeway speed limit. |

Easy to say now that you're in Canada.
There are lots of ways to save power and money that they could be utilizing, but don't.
For one, they tend to run the A/C on max, then open all the windows and let all the heat and humidity back in because one princess complains, then 10 minutes later they blast it on max again. Same with the heat in winter.
Draconian measures to limit A/C use cut directly into quality of life. And it really is about being cheap. |
Look, not having AC in Korea in the summer is pretty damn bad. All I am saying is that in the recent past, Korea had MAJOR issues with the powergrid due to over use of AC and hence they may be trying to avoid that. They could certainly find ways to save power in general terms and/or use it more efficiently. Some places do that already but lots of work needs to be done on that front. That I agree with.
As for the rest of your post, you have every right to your opinion.

Awww cute...only I do not reside in Vancouver but thanks. I sometimes wish I did as the weather there is nicer than what we have where we live now. I will consider your suggestion Scorpion. By the way...look to your left...my location is CLEAR to anyone.
May I humbly suggest you and augustine do everyone a favor and change your poster names to something that better represents you? You can come up with something. |

Out of interest, why do you still post on here after 5 years? The minute I get to leave here, I will never look at this site again. I hope.. |

My reasons for posting here have been repeated so many times that I am sure you can find a thread where they are stated. |

Why can't they just insulate the buildings, get energy efficient heating and cooling systems, put thick double windows in and quit opening the damn windows? This would save electricity and they wouldn't have to spend so much money or use so much energy. My common sense be damned! My 5 year old villa building has done all these things. I can stay cool in summer and warm in winter for minimal cost.
Just wish the schools and office buildings would do this. Believe me, I've worked in two very new school buildings that were tauted as being "green buildings" but they still never effen insulated the buildings or stopped opening the damn windows. I mean the kids hate it as much as we do. It's just the old geezers here that walk around in hot humid weather wearing coats and don't want the air con on. |

"Green" buildings is just a cute label. It just means they won't turn on the A/C on high settings.
Why don't they insulate, etc.? As stated before: cheap. Or, someone else will get that budget so it's fine for the kids and teachers to suffer... while the principal has the A/C on full blast in his office and a few other goodies. |

I think the 'GH" in his user name means "Gone Home". I think the "Busan" reference originally meant to read, "I now live nine thousand kilometers away from" Busan. There just wasn't enough room, so he shortened it.
PatrickGHVancouver has a better ring to it. Even if he no longer lives there, and has moved to Edmonton or Ottawa he's still a hell of a lot closer to Vancouver than he is to Busan. So, I say we make the new name official. We could even shorten it to 'PGHV'. |

My university still won't turn on the air conditioners they installed last Year in our classrooms or office. They say it will be turned on in June or July but I have given up asking.... As others have said their reasoning is to save electricity for both the environment; their own back pockets; and to help the country avoid the brownouts of previous years.
Personally I take issue with it. There is no structural planning to make the classrooms energy efficient - our office and classes are like a concrete pizza oven. Not bad for winter but Summer...aaaaah |

They're cheap. They're too cheap to do nuclear right, and they're too cheap to build the power plants so obviously needed.

Only they are building more power plants...power plants just don't spring up overnight.

It's nothing to do with being cheap. Originally they were going to build more nuclear plants but with the backlash of what recently happened in Japan those plans had to be put on hold and new plans had to be drawn up for different power plants.
| Quote: |
An additional 15.8 million kilowatts of electricity will come from the 18 new power plants in the plan approved Friday.
To secure enough supplies, the government has given out licenses to public and private companies to build 12 new thermal power plants using coal and six using natural gas.
Plans for new nuclear power plants, on the other hand, have been suspended.
Considering the peoples worsened sentiment toward nuclear power plants following the accident at Japans Fukushima nuclear power plant (in March 2011), the government decided to withhold any decision on new nuclear power plants that were earlier set to be completed between 2025 and 2027, the ministry said] |

My school won't even let us turn on the friggin' fans yet. I'm melting here, and it's affecting the quality of my teaching. The kids are wilting as well.
Not good for education. |

They WILL build them, not they ARE building them. This is part of a two-year review. So what about two years ago and two years before that? Why hadn't they already started building the power plants? The need should have been obvious.
As for the last quotation, you're accepting at face value the government's excuses. The Japanese problem certainly influenced the current moratorium, but so did all the problems with Korea's nuclear plants. When was the last time an earthquake created major damage in Korea?
With proper supervision, the nuclear plants that are off-line could well be generating the power so obviously needed. But they were either too cheap, too inept, or too corrupt to properly monitor the plants. |
