I think Korea has a lot more love-focused holidays than any other countries. The fourteenth day of each month always reminds us of our current love life; single or not. Young couples celebrate everything from first-kiss to first-date anniversary. You also feel somewhat obligated to buy something speical for your love bird every 100 days.
How about one year anniversary? Ooohhhh Wahhh, it is time to go buy a pair of silly-looking couple rings. One of my girlfriends once showed me a box full of rings. Instead of keeping love letters or photos, this girl was collecting couple rings. I am not kidding you, fellas.
If you look around, you will see the four-letter-word, 'LOVE', everywhere; t-shirts, mug-cups, letter stationerys, hats, table cloths, hankies, towels, etc.
I don't get it. I read some of you writing about k-girls expressing their love too fast and too soon. Maybe......there is too much love in the ROK air. What do ya think? |
I think it is thrown around way too soon, and too much. Personally, I believe it would take at least a year before words of love could have any depth. It's all about timing, and common sense. After dating one girl here for about 2 months, she said she loved me. I knew it couldn't be true. When you get to the stage of willingly throwing yourself in the way of a bullet for her then that's love. cheesy, but i can't think of any better example right now. It's so easy to say things and give people gifts, but I'd be betting that fast infatuation will quickly disappear and you're no longer flavour of the month. I can't stand casually thrown around words. It's all about showing it through action, not words or gimicky presents. but most of all, i guess, people are so impatient to "find it", when ironically, the only way is investing time in it to find it with the same person later.
But I also think this is a widespread mindset in other countries too. |

There is so much pressure to be in a relationship here, even more so than back home. Whether you watch a music video or watch a movie, go shopping or what, declarations of love are so much more pronounced here. Back home there are promise rings that are worn before engagement rings, so couple rings are OK, but couple T's is going a bit far, I think. I have even seen couples wear everything the same, down to the shoes. And I wanted to run for the hills.
Then with that and the whole "Are you married? Do you have a boyfriend? Why don't you have a boyfriend?" yeah, I'd say there's too much emphasis on being in a relationship. On some days, it gets me down.
I'm not sure what my feelings are for Black Day. I suppose it's fun to have an anti-Valentine's Day, but then a day for all single people is associated with black, a color associated with death and depression? Hmmm.... |
Ha, I totally forgot about couple T-shirts. This benign-looking but dangerous fashion trend can sometimes get on my nerve. I wish Nancy Walker could make fun of this silly couple T-shirts phenomenon in her cartoon, cathy, sometime. |

I thought promise rings had kinda disappeared in North America-that they were a 50-70s sort of thing. Like school rings, which also seem to have become irrelavant in this day and age.
interestingly, when I lived in scotland, I had a large group of friends that were part of a couple (in Canada most of my friends seem to be single, not sure that says anything though) and the consensus of the group was that guys say I love you quicker than girls. |

Seeing the word "LOVE" written all over the place isn't a big deal. English as a decoration is very popular here. I guess everyone likes the word. It's better than a lot of words.
What are some other of the most common decorative English words?
Happy, dream, friend, like, special, etc... all pretty upbeat words at least. |
