if you bring your own phone there are no contracts
it's just month to month, cancel anytime

IF it is free, clear of encumbrances and unlocked then month to month or you can get a fixed term contract.

If it is still under contract with someone then you have to deal with the phone company about that first.

thing is though
the way pricing works here, it is often cost prohibitive to buy a 2nd hand phone

the phone companies price the hardware low (when bought with a contract) and then shift the price to the phone service itself, which makes phone services in korea stupidly expensive for such a small landmass with a high tech, high density population

so if you buy a 2nd hand phone at the market value, you are paying the full market value of the phone, plus the high phone service fee
essentially subsidising the rest of korea's users phone hardware costs
its a crappy situation, i hate it, and it explains why koreans are always getting new phones

example: vega r3 2nd hand price currently maybe 275,000 won
cost of same phone brand new over 30 months when purchased with a contract around 240,000 won

only people in korea who buy 2nd hand phones are foreigners
what happens to the old phones that koreans get rid of?
I strongly suspect they get exported at a nice tidy profit

This is wrong, many Koreans buy second hand phones and there are 100s listed on the Naver Markets.
People buy them for kids, parents, grandparents etc. Also older (less tech savvy) Koreans buy cheap old 2G phones on very basic plans.
It is true that many foreigners buy used phones, however that trend is less common these days as the restrictions on contract phones were eased a few years ago.
