I was sitting outside a coffee shop in Itaewon on Saturday. I was just amazed at how many foreigners passing by were dreadfully obese. Now, I'll state for the record that I need to lose a bit of weight. But I cycle and walk and try to avoid certain foods. But I'm not obese, so I'm saddened sometimes to see so many (disgustingly) fat Westerners kicking about. Can that many people be allergic to fruit and exercise?

True, there are a lot of fit people teaching here too. But still, why are there so many fat Westerners here. To be honest, it's embarrassing. I can just imagine what Koreans think when they see some of these people rolling by. For some it's genetics, others have health conditions that limit their mobility. I get that, and I respect that. But it seems that far too many people are fat by choice. They just don't give a damn what they look like. And that ain't cool. We've got to look at them.

Sorry if this post seems unkind, but I was just amazed by the sheer volume of fatties passing me by in Itaewon. It was as if the Tea Party was having their annual convention in Seoul. Confused

Lose some weight people.

I live in Itaewon so I'm there plenty and it seems like most of the fat people walking around the main strip are mainly tourists or military related family people. I'm not overweight at all (well, little wine belly maybe) but I don't care and it doesn't bother me whatsoever; you're only here once, indulge in what makes you happy if you want, whatever that may be. It's very odd how much flack overweight people catch on this board though. Considering it seems like most of the people who post here are huge, balding dorks or semi-psychotic people like moondoggy, SR, PGHB or YTMDZ (think I'm missing a letter there so I made it up Surprised )

Muggy heat and lack of air con makes you lazy. At least it did for me. I was out in the countryside. Gyms were tiny rooms with crap equipment and and no air con. So, I stayed in my cubicle with it cranked. Also, small towns have not many options for eating. Only western food is junk. Plus putting sugars in things such as cereals, bread, etc. Easy to gain weight here. I actually did exercise in the west, eat low fat foods, bike, etc. But, Korea doesn't make exercise or staying in shape easy unless you only eat rice and kimchi and hike the mountain every night in the muggy, gross heat. Now, that said, Seoul is very different. Lots of walking, places that have air con to duck inside, healthy western foods, etc. So, Seoul can make you slimmer.

I moved to a regional city and found a couple of gyms that weren't retarded and used air con and didn't open the windows while doing so. Easier to go exercise. Got a good bike, ride a lot when it's not muggy in spring and fall. Still a pain in the 08987 but definately less hefty than my first couple of years. Anyways, I'm guessing the large folks are out of town teachers and maybe some are just American tourists or something.

Here is a way to save time. Simply choose one of the following responses and get on with your life:

(a) Yeah, Westerners are fat, man!
(b) But Koreans are racist.
(c) But Koreans are obsessed with appearance, and that's worse.
(d) It's mostly the women..
(e) It's because Korean food is terrible.
(f) It's America's fault.
(g) And yet they still get Korean girls.
(h) Who are you to comment, are you Brad Pitt or something?
(i) Yeah, I [insert humblebrag about exercise routine here]

It's hard to stay fat here. I walk miles everyday, sweating constantly. When I went back to the US, I gained 20 lbs in three weeks. No kidding. It was crazy. Although if you toss back a few bottles of Hite everynight, then I suppose you can keep the beer belly intact.

It baffles me that you a) wasted your free time to sit down and write this and b) care so much about this HOT TOPIC that you wanted to discuss it online.

What exactly is the point of your post?

Obviously racism, sexism, and homophobia are no longer acceptible in any form of discourse. As such, it seems like calling out fat people is the final frontier of online and in person bullying.

Honestly, what's it to you if people you don't even know are fat or not? Guess what, they know they are fat. They are not shocked by it. I'm sure they have spent along time knowing that they are fat and being teased and bullied for it. I'm also sure they have also spent countless hours belittling themselves, trying diets and workouts, and generally being miserable, so they really don't need morons like you starting another 'Foreigners are so fat. Ewwww fat people' thread on an online forum.

This is a forum about life in Korea.
You sir, need to get a life.

END TOPIC
