there are times that i nod and say hello to people regardless of ethnicity and nationality...there are also times that i dont....

but it seems like a lot of posters here are saying that because there is a similarity between two people, they have to acknowledge that other person.

i just gave the case of a korean-american in the states as an example of 2 people having a similarity (ethnically korean) and wanted to see what others had to say about that...

i do know that jeep wrangler owners seem to have a bond back in the states...everytime they pass another wrangler on the streets, they wave....off topic, i know...but it must somehow relate... Confused Shocked

*edit...if i see a gyopo on the subway here in korea, i don't really acknowledge them...i just continue reading my paper etc...

LOL last guy I started talking to was reading Henry Miller. But it was a pretty standard "Hi, how's it going, how's the book? Good? OK!" conversation... Embarassed

At everyone though? That's the question, and if not why not. Why smile and nod at random people?

It might be someone who is looking at me. Or a person wearing nice clothes. It might be a couple with kids (I'm getting clucky in my old age). In short they are just people who catch my eye because they stand out in a crowd. Most of the time they are korean because most of the people I see are korean.

Henry Miller hmmm *scribbles down note*

Whenever I see a family with young kids I would say "Hi" but I always think they must get more attention than anyone else here and wouldn't particularly appreciate more.

Do you find it easy to spot Kyopo's in Korea then? I assume it's how they dress that gives it away?

Hmmm...maybe I am getting clucky in my old(er than CLG) age, too. Twice in the past year I have taken pictures of toddlers (one in Beijing, two at the Namsangol Hanok Folk Village) just because they were cute. And of course I asked the parents before I did it.

Some people seem to be bringing up the "back home I wouldn't..." point. Well, we aren't "back home" we are in Korea.

I say "hi" to foreigners that I meet. Does that mean I want to be their new bestest friend? Heck no! (The rest of you pions are beneath me... Razz)

I just acknowledge people in a similar situation like mine.

That's my point, too, we are all what feels to be a million miles from home, and it doesn't hurt to be kind to someone who may be in need of some kind of human connection. It doesn't mean I want to be their bestest friend either, but being nice to someone can't hurt a bit.

It's all down to the situation I suppose- if I was skiing and found myself in the same cable car with some waegooks I'm sure I would say "hi". On the train going to Itaewon probably not.

I met CLG and Blueflower on a subway train and it stopped me from almost jumping on the tracks out of sheer boredom.

Very good meeting indeed!

It doesn't hurt to chat to people, as long as both parties are in a sociable mood and looking for the same thing...

I wish women were interested in intelligent men, but it does not seem to be that way anymore.
