One of my friends (F visa, so he has a bit more freedom) didn't go in when he didn't get paid. His boss called, frantically asking where he was. He said that he hadn't been paid, so he wasn't working. His boss begged him to come in and told him that she'd pay him soon. He said that he'd go in as soon as he received his pay. The money was transferred shortly after, and his boss called him back to tell him that he could come in now. He told her that he no longer worked there, because he doesn't work for people who don't pay him on time.

That's a little over the top. Geez, she may have been to busy to transfer the money or something like that. He sounds like a whiny primadonna.

The F-visa people do have a bit more freedom and your friend sounds like someone who knew the right thing to do. If he was working for a hagwon, there is little they could do against him since he didn't have to use them as a reference at all. Honestly, the reason hagwon owners take these liberties is because there are few, if any real help associations foreign workers can turn to, especially when the hagwon owner controls the E2 visa. Not saying all hagwon owners are bad, but it is unfortunate that some choose to work against their employees rather than work with them.

Absolute tosspot.

Like many people I work for money. If I was rich I would be teaching kids in orphanages free.

Paying your staff late is absolutely unacceptable in any circumstances.

I have run a business and my staff were always paid in full and on time. I retired at 30, but due to some poor investment decisins had to unretire Smile

Anyone who uses the money that their staff have worked for as an interest free loan is a parasite.

Now would you like my full opinion? Go to the tax office.

Schools have some time (maybe 14 days or so) to pay. So, even if it is late, that isn't enough to walk away.

A hagwon that pays late, still pays. There are many hagwons that don't pay at all. I have the feeling this F visa person just had enough of it there and didn't want to work there anymore.

If a hogwon can't pay you 1 month's salary after one month then why would you think that the hogwon could pay you two months salary after another month?

Walk away from this situation.

Just go to the airport and work another country or go home until the visa expires. Some people reportedly just flew out of Korea (visa is automatically canceled) and returned to a different part of Korea to get a new job.

Alternatively withhold your services until you get paid but pack your bags and set a deadline. If the school can pay you they will, if they can't then obviously you have to move on.

I guess there are places to go to to try to secure missing pay and release letters so I suppose you'd maybe try those.

But seriously if the school can't or won't pay you then why would you stay there? What happens when the day comes for severance and the ticket home?

Don't forget to warn any posters who ask for info about this school.
