No country has produced more rock greats than the UK. The Stones, Beatles, Zepplin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Queen, Sabbath, Clapton, Elton John, the Kinks, the Clash, etc. Yet they all seem to come from 'England'. Where's the Scottish, Welsh and N. Irish talent? Northern Ireland had Van Morrison, but that's it (with the exception of a noted guitarist here and there such as Gary Moore). Where are the Scottish and Welsh rockers of note? Yeah, I know that England has about 90% of the population, but the south of Ireland (with a mere five million people) has given up U2 and Thin Lizzy. Where are the Scottish bands?

Why does England rock harder than the rest of the UK?

Like football managers in reverse. Also the Jocks do pretty well on inventors, punching well above their weight

youre talking about an 'era' of music (mostly 70s) where the music scene was more predominant in the south of england.
These days, theres a lot of talent from wales; Charlotte church, steroephonics were pretty good as were/are the manics. Lost prophets, DJ sasha, duffy, 60ft dolls, badfinger, feeder, suoer furry animals, underworld.

Tom jones, all though a bit cheesy, was very famous back in the 60s and 70s and is a bit of an icon now.

what has uk got to show recently? Most decent bands come out of the USA, aus and canada.

(ps, I am a brit and you forgot about 'the police', radiohead and the sex pistols).

There's Bay City Rollers and Welsh are more known for making classically trained solo singers but my guess is that England had better music 'PRODUCERS' that do the arranging and London is by far the best music (i.e. dope) scene.

Culturally speaking, England has, pound for pound, produced more greats and had a greater influence than any country in say the last 500 years or so. Obviously I'm talking about more than just rock musicians (although I'm including that as well), but when you consider it's the home of Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens, etc., well...there aren't many other nations that could line up with those three, and they're just the tip of the iceberg. I think even if you apply demerits for biases due to empire, the dominance of the English language, etc etc, England still stands alone. Must be something in the weather there. I'm American, btw.

not no scotish bands. Simple minds in the 80s were pretty good, had more than a handfull of decent hits. I dont know if you remember travis? they had at least as many good songs as radiohead.

others include;

bay city rollers,
texas (q. of taste i suppose),
primal scream,
jesus and mary chain.
(wet wet wet were quite good quality song writers and musicians, dont really fit into the rock category though).
