The lack of A/C at my public school is getting to me. I'm hot, uncomfortable and reluctant to move away from my fan. Add to that the fact that my apartment doesn't have air conditioning, and that my stupid fan automatically turns off after ninety minutes. (Can't have people dying from fan death, can we?) This means I'm getting up 4 or 5 times a night to turn the bloody thing back on. Doesn't make for a very restful sleep...
Then I lumber in to an unconditined school.

So I'm thinking of wearing shorts tomorrow. The female teachers are all wearing either shorts or skirts, so why should men be suffering. Especially me, being a hairy bastard.

Any else going to work in (knee length) shorts? How was it received?

You'll get an e-mail like I did saying that you can't wear shorts, sandals, or anything remotely comfortable. We also have no A/C and for two weeks after my student broke our fan...no fan.

We can't wear sandals to school but we can wear slippers in our class.

Similar situation. All women wear shirts/shorts, but for men only gym teacher. School are cheap a$$e$ to disconnect air cond, so shorts it is. Meanwhile the other black pants wearing teachers all have sweat salt stains on their pants and sweat balls. Use common sense and do what your body tells you to do. Just shave your hairy legs prior to, don't want any kids petting the fur. Similar situation in Stockholm, good for the men! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-22828150

Good for them. Why should 50% of the work force be comfortable, and the other 50% miserable?

I'd guess men (and women?) in power like to see womens legs but not mens.

Some of the female teachers at my school dress like they're on a date.

Your fan at home will have an override button on it - that stops the timer from turning it off.....

It's normally not marked - or you press two of the normal buttons at once....

It was a pleasant surprise when someone showed me this neat trick!

Really? Is this your apartment or school housing? What kind of school would put you in a place with no a/c? It's freaking 35+ degrees during the summer.

Try going to work like this..

Alternatively, is there no Korean labour regulations at all about working conditions?

If you want to be comfortable in a hot room but not be a short-wearing pariah, go to UNIQLO and get some of the light linen pants they have. They're thin, loose, and close with a drawstring. Combine with one of their dry polos (or two, a fresh one for the afternoon) and you're good to go. I noticed for this season they have the same linen material with belt loops and normal pockets as well.

Above 40 or below -40 and you have an issue.
There is nothing in labor law.

No but there is in occupational health and safety

Quote:
Article 24 (Health Measures)
(1) An employer shall take measures necessary for the prevention
of the following health problems when carrying on business:
<snipped>
2. Health problems caused by radiation, harmful rays, high
temperature, low temperature, ultrasonic waves, noise,

vibration, abnormal air pressure, etc.;
<snipped>
6. Health problems caused by failures to maintain the proper
standards of ventilation, lighting, illumination, thermal
insulation, dampproofing, cleaning, etc.

(2) The health measures to be taken by an employer under
paragraph (1) shall be prescribed by the Ordinance of the Ministry
of Employment and Labor. <Amended by Act No. 10339, Jun. 4, 2010>
<This Article Wholly Amended by Act No. 9434, Feb. 6, 2009>

Which is a part of labour law..so..there is that..but except that, there is nothing..

Male + public school + showing up in shorts = seriously bad consequences.

Just the way it is.
