Foreign beer makers are rapidly increasing their market share in Korea amid falling sales of wine and whisky, according to an analysis by Lotte Mart, one of the country’s major discount retail stores, Sunday.
Sale of imported beer during June 1 to June 27 was 1.61 billion won, an increase of 41 percent from a year earlier, surpassing that of wine by 100 million won, Lotte Mart said.
This is the first time that imported beer was sold more than wine on a monthly basis.
The famous Japanese beer brand Asahi Super Dry was the best-selling beer in Lotte, followed by L Weizen, Heineken and Lager.
“We do see some consumers choosing imported beer instead of wine and whisky,” said Kim Min-hak, a sales personnel at a Lotte store in Seohyun-dong, Bundang, Gyeonggi Province.
“We are going to introduce more imported beer brands as part of our diversification strategies to attract more customers.”
The amount of Japanese beer imported here last year tripled to $26.3 million from some $7.32 million in 2008, according to an industry data.
Korea has seen a massive boom in the imported beer market in recent years and importers are capitalizing on the consumer trend.
The increasing demand for imported beer has negatively affected the sale of domestic beer brands, Kim said.
“A growing number of Koreans are trying to explore new tastes. The imported beer industry in Korea will expand further,” he said.
“While alcoholic beverages are thought to be recession-proof, we’re seeing significant evidence of changes in consumers’ buying habits,” said another sales member at Lotte.
In the first half of this year, revenue of imported beer rose to the 70 percent level in Lotte from the 36 percent level in 2008, the data showed.
Meanwhile, sales of whiskey fell sharply this year due to a protracted economic recession and a change in the local drinking culture.
According to other industry data, sales of whiskey dropped 12 percent to 748,026 cartons in the first five months of the year from 848,895 cartons a year earlier. Each carton contains 18 bottles of 500 milliliters of whiskey.

| As a imported wine drinker, I'm hoping this is good news. Hopefully it'll lead to a price drop on wine to try and pick up sales. 15 bucks for a bottle of yellow tail is ok, but still too much. |

I drink a good deal of wine too, but it's massively overpriced here. 15 bucks for a bottle of yellow tail might be OK with you, but I find it extremely exorbitant since the same bottle of wine costs 6 bucks in the US. WTF... and it's crappy Aussie wine. |

| Hopefully this mean Korean beer will continue to improve. I know most people and rightfully so don't think much of Korean beer, but it has improved a great deal in recent years. I'm glad people are buying Weizen beers as they are a favorite of mine. |

I agree about the price of wine. That's one of the big reasons I stick mainly to vodka and bourbon from Costco. |

Agreed. 15 bucks for Yellowtail is 15 bucks too much.
I wish they had more variety with their wine. It's basically the same as the crappy grocery store selection back home. Lots of different brands of crap.
For real wine you have to go to a specialty wine store with a real trained sommelier who will take you through a selection of meats and cheeses to go with everything.
A shame about the falling whiskey sales. I would like to see them get some more variety here, especially of the Bourbon variety. I could really go for a nice glass of Bulleit or some Rebel Yell. Either that or semi-reasonable prices on single malts, not the 100% markup we're stuck with.
But for taht to happen, Korea needs to change it's whiskey drinking culture, actually its drinking culture, and get it socially acceptable to sit alone at a bar and pound whiskey. |

Not often in a position to be defending Korea against you but how much variety do you need? Costco is so so, Shinsegae is overpriced, but Lotte Dept store & Mart, Emart and Homeplus have a pretty good selection from France, Italy, Spain, South America and the New world. Ranging in price from around 10,000 to upwards of a million. They also have pretty regular sales with big discounts and free delivery. Coming from the UK I admit Tesco et al have a bigger choice but during a sale, prices are getting pretty similar nowadays.
Actually the sommeliers in those places just tend to get in the way in my experience. All they do is tell you what colour it is, what country it comes from and which one is 'good' (ie they want to offload for some reason) while blocking access to the shelves |

If you guys are interested in good wine, my friend Jina Oh has a place called HeartWine. It's a 5 min straight walk outside of Samgakji station, ex. 4 (the side with all the shops going towards Shin Yongsan station).
Her prices are very fair and the selection is basically nothing you could go wrong with. The Australian wines she has are just ridiculously good.
Being involved with the beer-world, I can tell you that it's only going to get better. The guys who import Ballast Point are going to be bringing in SCULPIN in DRAFT!!! That's a beer that gets a 100% rating and it's going to be in Korea...on draft... |

I see the same tired grocery brands I sampled back home. Your Louis Jadots and Cote de Rhones.
This is where I used to go for my wine. Won't find any of the stuff here in grocery stores. I know I'm holding Korea to an impossible standard, and you can get by with what they have, but it's just not the same...

The sommeliers here will actually guide you through a whole process, they'll always have a couple of bottles open for free tastings, and will allow you to sample cheeses and meats to accompany everything.

I saw this on a "best of" list last week and picked up a bottle from an import store on my way home the other night. Totally lived up to the rating/hype. Awesome IPA and I can't wait to try it on tap. |

Yeah. According to a friend who would know better, the Sculpin in bottle is good, but it's filtered: i.e., even at a low filtering level, a lot of the hop oils are stripped.
So, if we get it in draft, unpasteurized...dear god, it should be amazing. |

I'm not a wine buff by any means but I don't get this. If a wine was good why wouldn't it get sold in more stores/supermarkets than an indifferent one? |
