Ok, so I have a random question:

I left Korea in March without buying out the rest of my 2 year phone contract (after one year) or having someone take it; I just left (stupidly).

Now, I am considering returning to Korea to teach again, and I just wondered if anyone knows if I'll run into any kind of trouble because of my broken phone contract? It wasn't a smartphone, just the cheapest plan they offer (not that that makes much difference).

I know your phone contracts, bank account, etc. are connected to your ARC and I'd get a new ARC if I returned, but I just want to know if anyone's heard of anything more severe than not being able to get a new phone contract happening to anyone who's done this. I'm having visions of being detained/arrested at the airport over it!

Non issue for debts under 5 million.

Pay your bill and you can even get a new phone contract or re-activate your old one.

Only 3 possibilities. Not that hard to track it down.
2 will give you service. One won't. They are the one you own money to.

thanks ttom, of course, you're right.

i was able to get a phone. they ran my ARC number and found that i apparently still had 2 phones numbers still registered to my ARC. i know where I got the first, but i can't remember where the 2nd was.

ttompatz, i was wondering, do you have to go back to the exact store you originally got it from in order to settle your debts? or perhaps is it possible to do it by calling the phone companies themselves?

btw, how would they calculate how much you owe back to them? the sum of the remainder of your contract + some kind of penalty? or perhaps the price of the phone itself as well?

Contact a "company" phone shop and not just a franchise. (better to go in than to phone them - take a Korean translator with you if your Korean is not too good).

I don't know since it will depend on the contract you had.

I am a bit worried about this, too.

Last time I lived in Korea, I was on a cheap phone plan. The day before I left, I went to try to turn my phone off and pay the last bill. I wanted to pay them and then get them to cut it off the next day (I still had to get to the airport the next morning, so I didn't want it off before then in case there was an emergency or something with my ride). Anyway, they said I couldn't turn it off until a couple days later, and I would have to come back...

So basically when I got home to the States, I was going to call Korea and get it turned off, but I never did... I always imagined that maybe my phone bill was still racking up for like 2 years. ! However when I went to Korea a year ago during the summer, it wasn't working so I guess not haha. And I didn't open a new bank account or get a phone for that month.

Anyway, will I have any issues getting a new phone/opening a new bank account? (My old bank account is still active I think, but I think I'd rather be at a different bank than Nonghyup and I lost my card and stuff anyway.)

Difficulty getting a new phone = maybe.
Difficulty getting a new bank account = no, not because of an old phone bill.
