I'm British but I found the title of this thread a little cringeworthy. Oasis and The Beatles were English and were totally overrated, mediocre, and their music makes you want to puke after a few listens. Truly abysmal.

Elvis Presley - Even his B-sides are better than anything McCartney or Lennon ever did.

In my view, you have to be totally dull to be classed as a legend by the UK music establishment.

The best group in human history are English and they are Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

Erm.....they dont. Heaps of equally great bands come from the US (not to mention other countries). Just of the top of my head....Jimi Hendrix, White Stripes, The Byrds, Velvet Underground, REM, The Stooges, MC5, CCR, Nick cave & the Bad Seeds......I could go on and on.

so ok, pink floyd - the wall, a story about poor pink. Money etc.
The who -my generation, baba orally etc. oh, and that god awful song about some kid who was deaf and blind.
dire straits from newcastle, which was then starting to suffer because of steel mills etc closing. Even the name means we are up the creek.
ozzy ozbourne was a thief at one point.
marc bolan - post war east london, expelled from school.
The kinks - working class.
the small faces - working class, infact most of the mod movement represented that in some way, maybe why it was so popular.
sting - from wallsend, which is still to this day a shithole.

the list goes on. Theres definatley a pattern. Social deprevation (percieved or real) and artistic expression...

More bunkum. Being working class doesn't mean a life of suffering. I'm working class and I had a happy upbringing.
Sting worked as a teacher.
Mark Knopfler worked as a journalist.
The Who guitarist was another art student.
Not exactly a life of suffering and pain.
Look at the UK's most popular bands now. Coldplay, Radiohead, Muse. All middle class kids who probably went to uni. Again, where's the suffering.

Most of the examples you've given are people complaining about imaginary situations because that's what the audience enjoy hearing about. Very few of these musicians have experienced true pain or have anything to genuinely complain about.

No country has produced more rock greats than the UK. The Stones, Beatles, Zepplin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Queen, Sabbath, Clapton, Elton John, the Kinks, the Clash, etc. Yet they all seem to come from 'England'. Where's the Scottish, Welsh and N. Irish talent? Northern Ireland had Van Morrison, but that's it (with the exception of a noted guitarist here and there such as Gary Moore). Where are the Scottish and Welsh rockers of note? Yeah, I know that England has about 90% of the population, but the south of Ireland (with a mere five million people) has given up U2 and Thin Lizzy. Where are the Scottish bands?

Why does England rock harder than the rest of the UK?

ELVIS. No one else even close.

I agree. Bunkum stacked on more bunkum.

Unless it's some guy beating on a lion-skin drum in East Africa.

I think you misunderstand the question. It's asking why all the great "British" bands come from England. It's not stating that all great bands come from England. It says nothing about the contributions to rock from the USA, Canada, Germany, or any other country. It's focus is exclusively on bands from the UK. So bringing up Elvis or CCR is neither here nor there.

Noone is saying there aren't great rock bands from the US. There clearly are.

first off, i never said that being working class meant that youd had a life of suffering. I was reffering to the general problems of the time.
whether the artist suffered or perceived social suffering or not, is irrelevant. Artists use what they have available to write, be it their experiences or taking note of what is happening around them. These days, its mostly about love because they haven't lived. Back then, personal expression and having a voice was alot more poignant. There were alot more complex social issues and people were still very oppressed.
People complaining about stuff gives their audience a way to relate to the music, i agree with that. A lot of people when they listen to music (especially as teenagers), hear something in a song that relates to their own, life experiences and this increases the connection with the band, singer or song. Music is/was a very personal experience for a lot of people (ever read the book the philosophy of metallica?).
The 60s and 70s started to give people a chance to move away from the nuclear family role, the expectationt that the man is the bread winner, gender roles, social conformity etc. This also gave people a chance to say (or hear) - im sick of this shit!

besides, your example of growing up working class isnt the same as someone who is in their 60s now, we're living in a completely different world to other generations. Its not comparable. When I was a kid, I had a colour tv, video and microwave and star wars figures. my parents bathed in metal tub in front of the fire, ate spam everyday and played with sticks and bits of rope.

Except elvis was a singer. Most of the people highlighted in this thread were called 'greats' because they were talented song writers, not just singers.

Thats why Justin Beiber and anyone from a talent show is a pile of crap in my eyes.
