Not as bad as Cotabato or Zamboanga but bombings do occur.

Take a large helping of common sense with you and exercise it.
Pack lightly.

I know a Philippine engineer from GenSan and he insists it's not that bad. The thing is, I hear outside of being the hometown of Manny Pacquiao, there isn't much to that city.

I have been to the Phils often but the furthest south I've gone is Davao (which is the No. 3 city in that country but village-like).

You obviously havent been to Davao City. Village-like? General Santos must be a rice patty then. Smile

Sorry yaya, but your description is very lacking. With a population of over 1.4 million, Davao City is hardly a village. Cebu city's population is even smaller!

I have been to GSC, it is a fine small city. The “tuna capital” of the Philippines. The locals call it “GenSen”. I traveled there by bus from Davao City and then flew out of the GSC airport back to Manila.

Some people told me there is a section along the bus route that there have been some safety problems with the Muslim conflict in the past, but not for awhile and security has been improved since. I never felt unsafe.

Davao is a proper city, GSC is a proper small city with a good feel. A lot of nice ocean, coastal views even when in the main part of the city. Large public ocean side park. I found the people to be friendly, taxi drivers charged reasonable fees, hotels are mostly basic but lower cost that many places in the Phils
