Get out of that apartment. Go get a yogwan. If you need a phone, buy a cellphone in Itaewon - you can buy a phone with phone cards for as low as 30,000 won.

No, its not possible. After you quit your job, you must leave the country. Go do this and come back on a tourist visa. A ferry to Japan and back is not that expensive.

As a self - proclaimed expert on immigration law in Seoul, you do not have to leave the country. You mentioned that you have turned in your ARC. That's all you need to do, and you are automatically reverted to a tourist visa. In the meantime, I agree that you should GET OUT! You are in a potentially volatile situation that usually only gets worse. Don't answer your phone...get a new one, or find a friend who can help you.
One last option is to report to immigration that this particular school is trying to coerce you into working illegally. Immigration just might look into that. Just might.

| I guess some schools are desperate to keep anyone they can get. Some situations are unbearable and yet they sometimes seem to find it hard to understand that the foreigner wants to leave. Some typically strange Korean thinking seems to be: "What's not love about this lousy job in the boonies, where the people are weird and you feel cut off from the world?" |

I second that- so you turn in your ARC and a tourist visa magically appears in your passport?
I think at the very least somebody somewhere has to stamp a tourist visa in your passport, and I imagine there would also need to be a stamp to void your work visa.
I definitely don't buy the 'automatic' part and remain skeptical on the 'don't have to leave the country' part.

| The only way to not have an E2 visa and not leave the country is to have your primary visa as a F2-1, then you go to immigration and say I quit my job. 5 minutes later you no longer have a E2. |

When you turn in your ARC, they void your E-2 and give you the visitor stamp. I have done this many times. I've been in Korea for 5 years now.
However, As mentioned, the last time I posted was last March (over a year ago) and haven't done it since before that time. (I also have an F-2 as of April 2004) and as we all know immigration changes policies as fast as we change our socks.
Oh, and by the way, I did it at the main immigration office in Seoul.
But don't take my word for it, just use common sense. Go to immigration, explain your situation and simply ask. |
