Alright so my situation: I've signed a contract with a hagwon in Pusan, submitted all of my documents, and now am just waiting on a Visa Issuance Number. The deadline that the school wants me in Korea is fast approaching though and still no word on this number. So my question: if I don't get my Visa in time to meet the deadline, can the hagwon rescind my offer? In any of your guys' experience, have you heard of it happening or experienced it yourselves?

Yes. I know of three individuals who missed the deadline for arriving in Korea and their job was cancelled. Two public school positions and one hagwon. One arrived a day late (missed flight) the other two didn't get Visas back in time to get here.

But keep your hopes up! I also have personal experience with starting a job two weeks later than we(the school and I) had initially agreed upon.

This is ALWAYS on a case by case basis. There are so many factors mixed in with the equation. Believe me. there are no TWO situations alike in Korea.

Dammit. It's frustrating because I literally applied for the visa number the day after I was offered the contract. There was literally no way I could have worked any faster.

When did you send your documents to the school? With mail, filing the paperwork by the school and Immigration processing it can take from 10 days to three weeks or more to get your VIN.

See, knowing this timeline, I'm seriously wondering why the hagwon set my arrival date so soon! Like I said, really really frustrating.

That sounds terrifying! What happened to your friend who missed his/her flight? Were they in Korea when they found out about the cancelled job or still at the airport?

I know communication with the hagwon is the best thing in a situation like this, would you have any tips on how to approach it? Should I be begging/apologizing at this point? Not quite sure if I can handle profusely apologizing though, since I have absolutely no control over the Visa office's timeline.

Contact the hagwon and ask on what date your documents were submitted to immigration. It takes 7 days for the visa issuance number. Once you have that, it's just a matter of applying for the visa.

Once you get the visa issuance number, let the school know that as it takes X days for the visa (5 working days for the UK), you intend to get a flight on a certain date, and when you will be arriving in Korea.

Once you have your visa issuance number, unless the school has another teacher in Korea who simply needs to transfer their E2, they are unlikely to rescind your job offer, because they will have to start the process again with someone else, who will arrive even later than you will.

My school wanted myself and my co-teacher there by 28th February, however due to the timeframe, he arrived on 2nd March and I didn't arrive until 10th March.

I stayed in communication with the school, and it wasn't a problem, despite my working myself into a total panic!

Ah, I see. Thank you for the sound advice Aine1979!

The strange thing is, I've been waiting 2 weeks now (counting from the day the documents were submitted to immigration) for the issuance number. I'm getting a little paranoid about the hold-up.
