Hey there,

I have a job offer with flights included. I know this is standard, but I'm in a bit of a unique situation.

I currently work for an airline and one of the benefits is extremely cheap flights. What I'm hoping to do is negotiate the "would be" price of flights to be reimbursed, not the actual cost of what is will be out of my pocket.

I figure, most other teachers cost their hagwon owners 2+million to fly them round trip. Why shouldn't I get the same benefit, minus the hundred bucks or so it will cost me to get over there?

Think a hagwon will pay a pre-negotiated price to me without asking to see the actual price of the ticket?

I think EPIK pays 1.3 million each way. I'd be happy with a million won....or even less.

I have to fly standby to get these cheap flights...so if a school doesn't go for this then it's in my best interest to fly confirmed on their dime.
My plan will save them some money and put some in my pocket. Pretty mutually beneficial I think.

Perhaps, but I don't see why. It would potentially save the school 2-300k per flight depending on what we negotiate.
Would be nice to travel on my passes as I can check in up to 3 bags with no charges.

We'll see.

^^ What he said.

In your home country, is it possible to walk into a business and request a big refund for an expensive item without a receipt/proof of purchase? Just curious.

what is more realistic, is that they will ask to see a receipt, refund and then be happy that you've saved them so much money.

The end

^^ What he said. X 1000!

I once saved about $600 on a flight. MY boss was tickled pink. End of story.
Comment"Good Job, teacher."

Ummm..not exactly what I was expecting since the contract clearly stated X amount of dollars would be given for the flight.

lol! All stellar responses...and I'm sure you guys are quite right.

It was foolish of me to think otherwise. Should have known better.

Maybe I should wait for EPIK. They pay you 1.3 mil per ticket. I could score a sweet deal!

They pay for the flight, they don't pay you money. The point is that you get a flight to the school/apartment and a flight home. If you can simply ask for excess cash, why not ask for bus fare, train fare, taxi fare, and subway fare even though you won't need it?

The 1,300,000 seems like a lot upfront, but looking at the salary amount you lose about 200,000/month unless you have a master's. I had 2.3-2.5 salaries. That's clearly 4,800,000 more. So you initially get 1,300,000 but you lose almost twice as much when factoring in your exit allowance.

I don't know what deal you have with the airline company. Let's say you get 800 and save 500. That's about 1,000,000 you saved, but you lose 3,800,000 with a flight already paid by a hagwon or reimbursed by another school.

If you want to make some real money, I suggest you get the job you really want and then talk to recruiters about offering group rates for flights. They can arrange flights for other teachers and you get a percentage for doing nothing other than hooking them up with your airline buddies.

There was a post a while ago for something like this. You could get cheaper flights and buy things like cell phones. I am not sure if it is still around and forgot the address.

If you can guarantee to your school that you will arrive on time or early, it is possible to negotiate a deal with some schools. Let them know that you'd like to arrange your own way to and from Korea - maybe you want to travel a bit before teaching.

Look up the lowest cost standard one-way airfare to Korea. Then ask for some lower amount as a cash bonus in lieu of airfare. If a flight is usually $1000, ask for $800 as a cash bonus in lieu of airfare - and you still have to pay it back if you don't complete 6 months. The same amount as a fixed price for return airfare. Many schools will jump at the chance to save on airfare and you can pocket the difference between your actual cost and the agreed cash bonus in lieu of airfare.

Win/Win.
