Just though I would share this with you.

My mother-in-law has several houses in Jeollabuk do in a small village of only 18 houses. It's a historical village that escaped the ravages of the Korean war and was generally left alone by the Japanese as it is too isolated. Many of the houses are constructed of mud, bamboo and straw and are hundreds of years old, and a lot have been abandoned. No young people live here anymore and it is populated by a few elderly farmers.

So anyway I was down there last weekend for 4 days and had time to do a little exploring. I figured that there must be relics scattered throughout this village, I was especially looking for pottery, old farming implements and such.

Anyway I was poking around the site of a recently demolished house and had dug up a few intact pots (how old I don't know) and some weird implements which I can't guess their use, when I decided to crawl into a bamboo stand as I could see several pots sticking out of the ground. It is located behind the village on the side of a steep mountain. So I was foraging around on a hill just above this bamboo stand when I noticed a couple of unusual rocks lying on the ground down a steep hillside. Intrigued I scampered down and checked them out. I had struck gold! Well stone statues at least. Both with well weathered faces, one being broken in half and the other more older looking one intact.

I told my mother-in-law and she asked the locals. They had no idea of their existence and had no idea of where they had come from. I took some photos and showed it to a history professor at my school. He proclaimed them to be Miruk-Bul a kind of buddha mixed with local folk customs and shaminism. He said that they were very old (500 years plus) and were important cultural relics. He also said that I should report them to the Ministry of Culture. I plan to do all this but hope that before I do I get the chance to go down again soon for some further exploration. WHo knows what I could find! I hoping lost gold buddhas and an old temple site.
