|
|
I worked in Korea for 2 months earlier this year and the school just paid me a very small portion of the salary I was supposed to get. They kept delaying my full payment so finally I had to quit. I tried to get the payment from them before I left Korea, but they complained that because I was quitting that would mean more expenses for them (they couldn't seem to understand that if I'd been paid I would not have quit in the first place) and wouldn't pay me. Anyway, at the time I already had a plane flight booked and was so emotionally and physically exhausted from being overworked with hardly any pay and having a terrible boss, that I cared more about getting away from there than getting the money. Now that I've been back and recovered more, it really bothers me that they seem to be just getting away with what they did. Does anyone have ideas on how I can get the money I earned or have you been in this situation and what did you do? thanks |

If you have a contract you can probably file a claim with labor board. I think the time limit is 2 years to file, but don't take my word on it.
They would have to prove that you received the money. If you worked those months in question without a contract, then forget it. I think you should have tried to get a release letter instead of flying home.
After getting a new school, you could have filed the claim and saved the airfare. Don't allow them to get away with this next time. They have 30 days I think to pay up, and then you can go to labor board. |

I would assume you can kiss your money good bye.
Unless your willing to hire a lawyer and take some kind of legal action, I don't see why they would suddenly change their mind and give you your money especially considering you're not even in Korea any more. And even if you did hire a lawyer and get your pay, the legal fees would eat up whatever cash you recieved. |

I don't know if they meant they are back in Korea or back in their home country. If you are in your home country, it's not worth it. |

FROM (within) the US there is virtually NOTHING you can do at this point in time.
The labor office won't initiate a complaint file from someone who is not in Korea and you won't be successful in initiating the paperwork from abroad.
Had you gone to the labor board when you were still in Korea (to begin the initial paperwork) you could have begun the process of getting your unpaid salary and gone on to other work with a new employer or returned home and had an agent appear to act on your behalf to get your unpaid wages.
Sorry to hear of your unfortunate circumstances.

Small price to pay for a lesson learned. I've met people here who have worked five months without getting paid a penny before I finally convinced them to accept the fact that the" big" pay day was never going to happen! Sad, but true. They just kept hoping for the best.

Yep. They got away! Sorry.
There's nothing you can do about it except "name and shame" on the blacklist.
NOTE TO NEW/FRESH/OPTIMISTIC ESL TEACHERS: If you don't get paid on the day it is supposed to happen, refuse to work another day, until it does. Otherwise, they will know you are naïve and easily manipulated.
If they "forget" to pay you, then you should "forget" to come to work the next day! I guarantee that money will magically appear. BEENTHEREDONETHAT in both private and public schools. |
