I've worked in quite a few public schools over the years, and most have one thing in common. The school, and the various classrooms, smell of unhealthy chemicals. It smells like the school is made of the cheapest, most unhealthy materials the school board could get its hands on. There are certain classrooms that I walk into and it hits me immediately. I'd hate to be a kid here with respiratory problems, or a teacher susceptable to migraines.

I don't understand how this is not an issue with parents and teachers.

Schools usually smell like wet mop soaked in bleach after its been used to clean a bathroom. That is my experience.

I think most people would rather take the chance on a chemical that kills all bacteria than risk a mix of healthy and unhealthy bacteria.

I imagine parents are faculty really don't care. It's like "Yup, kill everything, wipe clean" but have absolutely no idea that breathing it in is just destroying your insides.

Probably not Seoul. SMOE cut most of the foreign teachers. Did you hear about that?

Not from elementary schools. Rich people still need nannies.

i work at a uni and the students seem to be expected to clean the classrooms. They walk to the bathrooms and drag a mop that has been sitting in there for god knows how long to the classroom along the corridoor and then push it around the classroom, then drag it back to the bathroom. They seem to be oblivious to the smell from the thing, let alone to the need to wash it before or after making the classroom wet. The vacant looks on the faces of the students doing this lets me know that Korea is in for a generation that will rely on hired cleaners and delivered meals, as they have been pampered for all of their very existences ande have no idea how to cope with the demands of life.

They either don't mind the smell from the unwashed mop, or have no idea that the mop is causing the stink, and that by using the mop, the stench is spreading.

in relation to the original poster, when it comes to hygene, they have no clue what smells good, what smells bad, and what smells could kill them!

Yeah, I get the mop smell. Threy 'clean' the bathroom with it then the hallway and classroom. Sometimes the boys get a kick out of washing the urinal with it first. But that's not the odor I'm talking about. I'm talking about construction chemical smells, like glues, adhesives, cheap plastics, etc. Not good for the kiddies. I must add that I have also lived in apartments here with similar smells, but in those cases the foul chemical smells (migraine-inducing) seemed to be coming from the cheaply manufactured furniture, especially cupboards and desk drawers. I used to live in a five room apartment and there was one room I'm simply would not go into. The chemical smells would have toppled a horse.

Yet, Koreans don't seem to even notice it.
