Well I won the lottery tonight. I got 5 out of 6 numbers. So I won about 1.5 million won. Plus another 50,000 won. Yep, I won twice! Will tell of how the cashing goes and how much tax is. Is it still Nonghyup bank to go to collect. Plus how much is the tax I have seen 22%, 30% (here).
Minus the drinks tonight. I hope to get a new smart phone.
Really! I won! |
Congratulations Skippy! |

You got 5 out of 6 numbers! wow. But i bet it was a bit painful being so close to the jackpot!
The website for korean lotto scratch cards is below (webite all in korean).
http://www.bokgwon.or.kr/index.jsp
There are 3 kinds of instant scratch cards and they cost 500, 1000, or 2000 won each, depending on the jackpot size (200 million won, 500 million, and 1 billion won jackpot respectively).
There is also a Wednesday 'pension' lottery where you buy a ticket that costs 1,000 won, and the jackpot is paid in installments over 20 years (5 million a month, every month for 20 yrs).
All the info can be found on the website linked above. |

| Anyone know what the payout percentage is? What I mean is, what percentage of the income the lottery receives do they actually pay out in winnings? |

That is the question? I have seen 30% mentioned here. Another website says 22%., but that might be just for pension lottery. Or it could be 33%. |

OK people, I collected my winnings today. It took a little while to get done as I am a bit lazy and busy. Thanks to a coworker who made a call to the lottery offices he asked for a few details. He was told that I a waygook could collect.
I was told to bring my ARC (of course) and my passport too.
For foreigners in the future that win the lottery. For those that win more then 50k won.
1) You can collect higher value prizes. No need for a Korean sponser, middle man, etc.
2) The high value prizes have to be collected from Nonghyup Bank. Any branch should be able to do it. I went to a medium sized one in the Daejeon Bus Terminal. Smaller ones I would suspect would be a bit difficult.
3) You do not need to have an account with NongHyup. The where able to do a transfer for 3000 won. So bring you other bank's bankbook.
I went to the bank, got a ticket for waiting. The clerk clicked the general teller counter area. NOT the accounts, foreign exchange desk area, etc area.
When it was my turn, went up to the counter. Showed the ticket and gave my ARC and passport. The teller was a little surprised, but she proceeded to start processing the paperwork. Mainly was taking ticket. Filling in my name and signing a bank paper. Then filling in an account transfer slip to my KB* account. Also had to sign another piece of paper verifying my number would be checked by the government. I then I got a receipt with the final tally of my two prizes. Surprising I thought she would double check my ID with the passport but she ignored it.
Now the taxes, I think it was just automatic attached with my card. The cashier said the rate was 22%. Through the receipt mentions 33%. I payed 22% out of the winnings. Well about 22%. Trying to fiqure out the receipt.
Prize for 5 numbers: 1,562,431 won
Price for 4 numbers: 50,000 won
Total of two prizes: 1,612,431 won
Minus 2 taxes (?) 343,500
So for a grand total of 1,268,931 won.
Took about 25 minutes with 15 min of that waiting.
Luckily the clerk could speak a smattering of English so made the process easier.
Then I went up the stairs to the Samsung Store and bought the new Galaxy S4 outright. Bit more expensive then I thought.

Ahhh, so the new limit is 50k before they tax you. Still pretty low in my opinion, but I guess it's better than over 5000-won (or whatever 4 numbers are). |
