I'm talking about reimbursement for airfare. Is it a good idea to work at a place that will reimburse you for half your ticket upon arrival and then the other half when you complete your contract?
I'd imagine it can't be any worse then the school buying your ticket and then lording it over you if they get mad at you...
I'm a newbie and a school I'm talking to (Uncle Lyon English Academy) is offering this "half now half later" reimbursement plan....
Advice please

Sounds alright.
I get a 1/4 when i get there.
Another after 1/4 after 3 months.
The other 1/2 when i leave.
Just insurance for them. |

That kind of reimbursement is perfectly normal IMO. That's the way I got paid.
Think about it, if a school pays you for a whole return ticket, and you cruise to another school without completing a contract, then they have to do it all over again for another teacher ad nauseum.
Just my 5c. |

That sounds fine. They should not pay for your trip home until you finish the job. |

When I got to my school in Daegu, I came on a one way ticket because in order to get here and then actually teach for my full year it would have put me four days over a year and the airlines only book up to a year. (I arrived on a Thursday, classes didn't start until the Monday). They gave me the entire amount of my ticket the next day. Its what I lived on until I got my first pay day.
On the flipside, I have a question about this. I am not worried about getting a return air ticket back from them as they are very reputable people. However, what if I decide to stay, and move to another working situation. Do they have to give me a return ticket if I do not return? Do they have to reimburse cash instead? How does that work?
Thanks |

What does your contract say? I've known a few people to negotiate payment for the cost of the return ticket out of their employer rather than the actual ticket itself. If they're reputable people, as you say, you may be able to do this if your contract clearly stipulates a return airfare. |

When I didn't know my plans at the end of my contract with my first school, they got sick of waiting for a departure date from me and ended up just giving me some money. It wasn't really quite enough money, but it was still a decent chunk of change. You could say that you're going to travel around Asia before you go home and end up getting money instead or something...

The only time that I'd worry about ticket stuff is when they won't pay any of it until you finish your contract. That would be bunk. |
