This absolutely fits with the thinking of the British expats I've known. I can think of only 1 that has returned home, and he almost came back here a few months ago.

More than three-quarters of British expats would never return home out of choice, a study has revealed.
The research, carried out by financial advisory organisation the deVere Group, showed that 77 per cent of expatriates said they would only consider a permanent return to Britain if it became untenable to live overseas due to financial, health or family concerns. |

When it came to factors that would stop them returning home, the top three were Britain’s poor climate, high crime levels and high cost of living. |

Do not make too much of this. I believe British ex-pats have their choice of just about any European locale as home. |

Three quarters of people who decided to move from one place to another place wouldn't move back to the place where they originally lived. That's why they moved in the first place isn't it? |

Whiners, Britain is probably better than the US. I only go back to the USA on vacation or when I have to. |

No. British people living outside of the UK but still Europe means theyre still expats. Dont try to downplay a lot of British people thinking their home country is a dump.
Funny how British people are always bragging about how influential their country is and never coming back once they see the outside world. |

Yeah, I'd agree. The british expats must overwhelmingly be in Europe. They aren't living in Korea. Europe is probably 10x easier to live in than Korea. A brit in France, they could probably watch SkyTV via a dish. Going to live in Korea, is more akin to moving to mars. |

I'd guesstimate the largest majority live in Australia, though I'm sure the figures are out there somewhere. To answer Swampfox, I'd be surprised if as many as a quarter of Brits who emmigrated there would want to come back. I'd have thought it'd be lower. The main reason they go is the much improved standard of living for people who can do certain kinds of jobs. Plus, Australian cities usually score very highly in those polls about the best places to live in the world. I'm a bit of a Europhile so it definitely wouldn't suit me. |

^^ I wasn't reading this topic as emigrants (which I'd think AUS, Can, USA), but expats. For example I'd guess there are a lot of expats in Saudi, but not many immigrants. |

Yeah you're probably right. But if an ex pat lives in Europe say, which he can legally anyway, and he doesn't want to go home. Doesn't that make him an emigrant? |

Are they really bragging about that?
Who exactly does this bragging?
And when?
And how?
Do you have any proof of said bragging? |

Seriously, you do not recognize the smug aloofness prevalent in about 70 percent of British (English, mostly) expats? They tend to be the foremost experts on American culture, or perhaps a close 2nd to Canadians.

How exactly can a person be aloof yet smug?
Surely the very definition of being aloof is to remove yourself from any kind of proceedings - can that really be done in a self-righteous manner?
I've never met a British person claiming to be an expert on American culture - and in all honesty I cannot think of a single reason why any person would want to claim such a thing... |
