What should a 2 kilowatt electric heater cost per hour?
By comparison what would a 10-pyeong apartment ondol cost per hour?

I'm thinking of buying a Dimplex OFRC20C or similar heater when it gets cold.

I think the gas floor heating will work out to be slightly cheaper than electric heating. Gas tends to be cheaper than electric rates. But, it also depends on how energy efficient your place is and if your place has any insulation.

insulate your windows and use gas. electricity costs here are priced in tiers. the more you use, the more expensive each kilowatt hour costs. it can get pretty nasty.

You could try charcoal. Some Koreans use it as a cheaper alternative.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll look into improving insulation and stick with the ondol heating. I didn't know about the tiered electricity cost before and I don't want to pay 200,000 won no matter what!

Just saw this info about tiered costs: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=229584

10cents is an average kW. The A/C uses way under 1kW/h average, so even 24/7, it would not be over 72$. 5hr/day, *30 = 15$.
Anything beyond that (for A/C only!) and you're either getting ripped off for the electricity cost, or you got a leecher (not impossible).

Don’t you know that the electricity rates are tiered? Between 0-100 kWh one kilowatt costs 59.1 won while 301-400kWh one unit costs 273.2 won. If you use your A/C a lot it is very easy to hit 300 and just a little more usage will double your bill. Once you hit 400 or 500 kWh it gets insanely expensive.
150kWh is 14,690 Krw
250kWh – 32,820 Krw
350kWh- 61,250 Krw

Exactly.

My wife saves every single bill we get. I don't know why Very Happy but it has given me the chance to look at my bills from my officetel a couple years ago. Here it is:

A November bill: 275 kWh = 24,690 (less than the 50,000 I quoted above)

A July bill: 570 kWh = 179,930

For using 2x the electricity, you pay 7x more!! That's just freaking ridiculous.

So, that's 150,000 a month for running the air con 2-3 hours per day, on a typical day. Usage would be more on the weekends of course. And I'm talking about one of those small wall-mounted air cons. I'm sure it wasn't energy star rated and probably used more electric than a more efficient one would.

EDIT: I lived in an upscale, newish building. I'm sure no one was leeching off my electric.

A good indicator is: if you use 100K for A/C in the summer, there's no chance you can do as good for heating with A/C in the winter. And A/Cs (inveters at least) are more efficient than simple heaters.

Definitely use gas. When I have lived in apartments with washing machines in the kitchen area, I have used only gas and the bills have been around 10,000 per month during the winter. At one school, the washing machine was in a closet with three big windows on each side, and the washing machine's pipe was a couple inches from the window causing it to freeze. I had to use a heater a couple of times to thaw out the washing machine, jacking my electricity bill up seriously high, 100,000 or more when it's usually around 10,000 won.

Even with electricity being more expensive than gas, a small one room will not drive up your costs that much. Larger businesses and industrial complexes will drive up electric costs more.
