Another example of smell in context of bullying: ever notice that when somebody breaks wind, pass gas, etc in a crowded room, it's always some minority that gets accused first? A classic excuse: "I can tell it was you because I know the smell of Asian farts." Why don't you tell me that that makes perfect sense. |
This reminds me of something that happened when I was a kid in the American South. When our team would play a road game, the players, the coaches, the cheerleaders, and maybe a few parents would take buses. There was always a foul odor on the way to and from one of the schools. I was familiar with that area and knew it was actually a tannery, but most of the people didn't know what the odor was.
I'm not sure why, but there was always a roll of toilet paper in the front of the bus, and Coach would always ride while standing there on the steps of the front of the bus. When we could pass the tannery and the odor would gross everyone out, the head coach would pick up the roll of toilet paper, wave it, and yell, "TOOOOOODDDDDDD!!!" Todd was the only black person on the bus. The coach did that two years in a row, coming and going to that school.
On one of the trips to the other town, Todd and I were listening to Todd's Eddie Murphy tape. One of us was using the left earbud and the other was using the right earbud. On the tape, Murphy was doing a monologue talking about how white people often are like, "Oh my God Charlie, we just f-cked up! What are we gonna do? Quick! We need to think of something! ... Bill, I have an idea! Over there's a black guy! Let's blame it on the black guy! He won't care. They always take the blame!" When Coach waved the toilet paper and yelled, "TOOOOOOODDDDDDDD!!!" Todd just calmly looked over at me, nodded his head, and commented, "Blame it on the black guy..." which made me laugh.
That was on the way to the game. On the way back, the toilet paper incident was worse. The thing at our school was to either play Truth or Dare where players and cheerleaders would kiss under blankets for an X number of minutes or seconds after being dared to. Or we'd just pair off without playing. Sure enough, we passed the tannery and Coach was up in the front of the bus yelling, "TOOOOOOOOODDDDDD!"
A few days after one of the game, Todd was talking about how he had been seated with a really pretty cheerleader he really liked on the way home and was almost to first or second base when Coach did that. Todd was a hilarious guy, and the way he told the story and mimicked Coach waving the toilet paper while yelling, "TOOOOOODDDDDDD!!!!" in Coach's Cajun accent was very hilarious to us, but it was obvious the incidents really upset him. |

Thanks byrddogs. I am very, very happy and I've only just arrived two weeks ago! It's a new life for me and as an previous expat teacher in Korea, I was not looking forward to the various frustrations involved. But...very few of those things have happened! I am respected at work, not stared at everywhere I go, treated like a normal human being in shops and taxis (no giggling or ripoffs), and everyone has gone overboard to help me adjust. The only yucky thing that happened is I got a mild case of the throw-ups after inadvertently ingesting the tap water in my apartment. But that lasted 5 hours and was no big deal.
Miles apart from my experience in Korea; that would be my main point here.
SO relieved. |

Funny when the shoe is on the other foot, the language suddenly turns into simply a "putdown", rather than "racist", or "realpolitik". Yup, as I thought, a one way street as usual.

Anyway, this has turned out to be like a Republican Townhall debate. I'm talking about bullying, and you are talking about hygiene. As long as I don't say anything about hygiene, then I don't make any logical sense, ... |
Very true on that part. |

Pay attention when you next have a chance to attend bullying prevention class.
But if you are fine with bullying then carry on, I'd hate to deny your human-rights. |
