|
|
Hello everyone!
It's been a long time since I've been in Korea, but you have all been a helpful resource for me before, so I thought I'd sneak back on here and ask you all a question.
I didn't do too much private instruction while in Seoul, but I've been contacted by an Armenian woman here in Canada who would like to start meeting with me once a week for private lessons - just to gain some confidence in her skills.
I'm more than happy to help her out, but I'm not up to date with what the going rate for private, one-on-one tutoring rates per hour are for an adult learner.
She's incredibly wealthy and her family basically owns half of the city I live in, but I want to offer a fair rate, and not take advantage of that fact.
Any advice? I was thinking the $40-$50/hour range, but I might be way off.
Thanks!

Depends where you are and what she actually wants. Non-Asian students tend to want more than just "free talking."
A lot of Koreans wanted lessons in Vancouver but wouldn't pay over 20-25$ an hour. |

She's specifically looking to gain confidence in her conversational skills. Right now she's relying on a hired assistant to do things for her like schedule appointments, converse with the employees in the grocery store, etc. She would like to have confidence to do these tasks herself, rather than relying on hired staff.
We're in Nova Scotia (Halifax).
She also lives in Florida for 3 months during the winter, and feels more nervous speaking English there than here at home, as she says they aren't as friendly to non-native speakers down there and she is nervous about making mistakes. |

Also, I'm prepared to do much more than free-talking. |

I don't think you'll get $40-50cdn from the lady unless she's both rich AND stupid. I haven't been back east in a while, but I think you'd be hard-pressed to find many part-timers making $30 per hr. (If I'm wrong, I'm happy for you, them, and everyone.) She what she says to $50, and then go from there. Lots of people can get $50 here(nowadays, more like 30-50), but there actually ARE language pals in Canada who don't care about making money and would want to help her for free...there's is also the YWCA, etc. Best of luck/skill. |

I am not sure if this site covers Canada, or if it is US only, but you can try it -- type in the zip code and subject, and see what other folks in the area are charging for one-on-one tutoring.
http://www.wyzant.com/
Of course, the site takes 60% of the hourly pay (so someone listed at $50 an hour only gets $30 an hour, so $35 cash would be better than $50 through the site -- but "cheating" the site in that way would result in the tutor being banned from it, so of course no one ever DOES do the under-the-table thing).
Some of the tutors will also agree to a lower rate, but the site could give you some ballpark figures.... |
