This should give you some idea how profitable fast food is for the larger chains. Those smaller "McCafe's" are extremely profitable. Full article is at the link.

The workers have to get paid and the bills are overhang too. If they sold burgers at base cost the would go out of business fast! 우유 |

The point of the article wasnt so much about the markup as the cheapness of the ingredients that go into what they serve. |

The article mentions corporate supply of soda syrup, but I wonder where Japanese (and for the matter, Korean) McD's source their other ingredients. Is the chicken, beef, and potato shipped over from the States as well? |

I remember reading or watching something that said that things like potatoes, milk, beef etc are all locally sourced. Will try to find the link |

what does "base cost" mean?
Are they talking about the cost of the raw materials or are they talking about the cost to actually produce the food and place it on the counter for people to eat? Is this the projected cost or is this based on past numbers?
If it's based on past numbers, then things like rent, labor, advertising, etc are all included. This means that 1) the raw materials are cheap and 2) they sell SO much of it that they can afford the high labor and fixed costs of Japan. |

Do you remember the photos of how they make mcnuggets? It was a purple ooze of ground and processed chicken by-product such as fat, cartilages, tendons, etc.
The ingredients will make you feel sick if you really think about it.
Hot Dogs, too. |

Probably. Fast food is basically just grains, and they can ship that crap anywhere.
A burger is mostly bread (grains), a little meat from grain fed cows, with processed cheese (make from "vegetable" oil, which is a grain). Soda is just high fructose corn syrup (grains). Chicken nuggets are a little bit of low quality chicken, covered in grains, and fried in grain oil. Etc...
That's why it's so cheap. |
