Hey everyone,

I am in the process of applying to teach at a hagwon in SK and I am considering teaching in Bundang but most people say that it is really boring.

So I'd like to know of any other places that are like Bundang except better entertainment/nightlife as well as:

- New, clean apartments
- Clean air
- Nature

I recently heard that Ilsan is a good place. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

umm... i hope you aren't planning on your school giving you a "new clean apartment" or paying for one yourself (gonna be expensive) on a hagwon salary...

the air in korea isn't bad in general, but nature and "better entertainment/nightlife" don't go hand in hand here. the places with good entertainment and nightlife are in seoul and there's not much nature to be found.

my recommendation is drop every pre-conceived notion you have and your existing needs if you want to come here. you will be hard-pressed to find those things all together. plus bundang is fine and it's very convenient to gangnam.

You're asking a lot... Very Happy

However, let's break it down. Clean air is found only in Gangwondo and only above elevation of 400m or so. Lucky for you Gangwondo also has nature. New clean apartments that are affordable are found only in developing cities such as Wonju, Chunchun, Inje, Taebaek. As for nightlife, I assume that you mean bar-crawl. Well, only city worth bar-crawling is Seoul, and Seoul doesn't have clean air or nature or affordable new clean apartment. So, the answer is, Korean is not good enough for you! Try Shanghai Laughing

Maybe not clean air but there are lots of easily accessible mountains you can hike around Seoul.

I'd take the Bundang job. It's a nice area.

I don't think I am asking for a lot. From what I have seen/read Bundang already has the cleaner air, newer apartments, and nature. All I am asking is if there is a place that is like Bundang except a little bit better nightlife or entertainment. I am not someone who parties frequently so I don't need entertainment like Seoul but just an area that draws a significant number of people.

From what I am reading in other threads and on youtube, Ilsan and Anyang seems to be what I am looking for so I was wondering if people could comment on that.

Remember "Cohiba's Rule" (Now better than ever!):

Think twice before you live outside of Seoul. "In Seoul" and
"outside of Seoul" are like two different countries. Seoul
is an interesting place with variety and venues for most
tastes. Outside of Seoul you will find a homogeneous Korean
culture. I don't mean this in a bad way, but you will never
find things like: French, Greek, Indian or any other ethnic
foods. Markets that sell sherry, pate, pastrami, ricotta cheese.
Specialty shops that sell cuban cigars, European pies, cold
cuts or rye breads. Just to name a few things.

The FFF RULE: FFF=Fun For Foreigners.

If FFF in Seoul = 100, then FFF decreases at
1/distance. So 2km from Seoul FFF=1/2(100)=50;
10km from Seoul FFF=1/10(100)=10. This rule is
a rule for nightlife, food and foreign products only.
Nature etc. is on a different scale altogether.

This means you will be wasting a lot of time commuting
to Seoul. This is especially a drag if you have been
boozing on a Friday night and there are no buses or
trains.

I, unfortunately, live near Seoul where the FFF factor
is almost in the negativerange. I know!

Bundang is probably your best bet outside of Seoul. It's the nicest suburb by far, and has very good access to Seoul. It's not prohibitively expensive, but it's not much cheaper than most areas in Seoul (as far as housing goes).

How does it compare to Ilsan?

After living there for close to a decade.... hands down, Bundang-gu is just about the best Gu to live in.

30 minutes to Itaewon or Gangnam - 45 to Hongdae. (better commute times than many who actually live in Seoul).
Easy access via hiway 1 to the rest of the country.
Convenient shopping and foods for foreigners.
Just make sure you are within walking distance of the subway (buses are great but learning to actually read Korean makes it work better than the subway).

But lets say I don't want to go to Itaewon or Gangnam all the time and I heard that you need to take a cab to get back to Bundang after 1:30am or something. Is Bundang itself good for people in their early 20s? For some reason I am getting the impression that Ilsan is more alive than Bundang and has a better demographic.

my god man. for the things you've mentioned get ilsan out of your mind. it's not what you are looking for. as i and others have already mentioned for your list of slightly unrealstic requirements, bundang wins by a landslide. if you really plan on being in itaewon that often i'd suggest just living there with all the other clueless foreigners.

Seriously. From the sounds of it the guy has never been to Korea yet chooses to ignore all suggestions from people on the board because he's set on going to Ilsan.

If you're this particular about things OP I foresee a difficult time in Korea for you.

I never said I plan on being in Itaewon often; I said quite the opposite. As for a place with clean air, nature, and new apartments (by comparison to Seoul), I know Bundang already offers that. However many people have said that Bundang is boring and I have heard good things about Ilsan being that it is also new which implies it also has new apartments, clean air, and nature. If Ilsan has better entertainment/nightlife then it would be a perfect match for me otherwise I'll probably go to Bundang.
