| So my passport expires in November and I have all my documentation together for it. The only question I have, if anyone knows, is what time period do I have to renew my passport. I know in Canada you have up to a year after expiry to renew. Does this also apply in Korea, so long as I am not traveling out of the country? Thanks in advance for any assistance. |

BEFORE it expires or you will be in violation of immigration law (regardless of what Canada allows you to do for replacement ....

You should get a new passport anyway because travel abroad is usually not allowed if you have only 6 months or less validity left on your passport. I know people who went to Incheon for a family trip not knowing this and couldn't leave the country because of that restriction.
I just got a new passport and you can now get one that is valid for 10 years. The procedure has been simplified too. The 10 year one costs 283,500 won. Expensive but it's good for 10 years and each page has lots of pictures of important Canadian people, places and events. It really looks nice IMO. They did a good job on redesigning it. |

renew it BEFORE it expires! You cant let it expire while you're on your korean visa or abroad..
and BTW I hope both of you, cjj681 and Stan Rogers, go to immigration within 10 days of getting a new passport issued ( regardless of visa status.. if you have a visa in korea you have to change your passport number if you renew your passport... I'm on an F6). You need to change your passport number on File at immigration. If you don't you will get fined and potentially get a black mark on your file. Much like you would if you overstay your visa... I'm just saying from experience ...
I actually went a few days after receiving the passport in the mail HOWEVEr for some reason the issue date on the passport was from 3 weeks back ( the same day I applied for the passport). By the time i received it in the mail It took 3 weeks. When korean immigration saw that the passport was 3 weeks old and I missed their 10day deadline for switching the passport, they weren't too happy about it and wanted to fine me. I just said I was sorry and luckily I had the envelop that the canadian embassy used to send the passport that had everything Dated. To show as proof that i didn't receive the passport until a few days before and there was no way i could have brought it within those 10 days...
anyways Just get the passport number updated on your file within 10 days of the passport issue date.... to avoid any problems... |

I once renewed my passport. I even made a trip to the local immigration office to tell them about it. They just looked at my passport and said don't worry about it, and sent me on my way.
When I left Korea for a trip, I showed them both my new and old expired passport, no problems at all. My passport renewal is coming up next year, so I'm not sure if I'll bother with the trip to immigration. |

Thanks for the heads up on the 10 day rule. I did show immigration my new passport 2 days after receiving it from the Canadian Embassy. I just wanted everything updated with Korean immigration quickly in case I had to suddenly leave Korea for a family emergency or something like that. I didn't want to have any confusion with them.
Just a side note, I have an F5 and this time they did not put a visa sticker in my passport. They just said they wanted the new passport number and that was good enough. However when I travel out of the country I'm going to carry my old passport with the visa sticker in it anyway just in case their system isn't working. I don't want to be in a situation where I am arguing with a misinformed computer. |

They didnt put any visa sticker in my passport either.
The only issue you might have with that isnt with Korean immigration when you come back to korea. As long as you have a valid ARC card that's all you need to get back into the country. Well you need the passport for travel document but it doesnt matter if you have a visa/ visa sticker in it. your ARC is your entry ticket in. If you dont have an ARC and its your first time in the country then of course you'll need something in the passport.
The issue is going to be with Airport staff checking your documents before coming to korea. When I flew from Japan to Korea they checked my passport if i had a visa. since it was a new passport It didnt have one. I gave them my ARC card but they didnt know what it was.... It's annoying but they eventually figure out that my ARC is just fine and then let me on the plane... Once at Incheon They didnt care to check the passport visa if i showed them the ARC card... |

Wonderful.... Educating foriegn ground staff about Korea Immigration's new procedures again. Lovely  I've been doing this for years. Answering stupid questions like "What does F2 mean?" or "What does F5 mean?" now it'll be "You can't go to Korea because you don't have a visa in your passport." "What is this card you gave me? I can't read it. It doesn't say visa."
What is even worse is that now some foreigners going to Korea will have visa stickers and some won't. It'll confuse the Hell out of the foreign ground staff workers abroad. |

All over Asia and trips to north America and I have NEVER had a problem.
Check in counter: you don't have a Korean visa in your passport.
me: I have resident status (show ARC).
Check in counter: OK, good, thanks (checks me in).
Nobody else cares - other than the clerk at check-in or passport control when you enter Korea and if you claim residence and show your ARC they are happy (the airline's obligations for your visa waived travel have been met).

| Update on this. I renewed my passport and got it back within 7 business days. To notify immigration about your passport number change you can use the HiKorea site e-application service, but only in Korean. I submitted my application and should know by Friday if it has been put through. |

cjj681, that was 7 business days for renewing a canadian passport in Korea? That sounds great. Did you use the new simplified application that did not require a guarantor?
Stan Rogers, it sounds like it took between 2 and 3 weeks to renew your passport, is that correct? Was it also done with the new simplified no guarantor process?
I plan to take the simplified guarantor form to the consulate in Busan and apply there. Once I get it back, I also then plan to apply to change from E2 to the points via. |

| Daniel 1981: Yes it was the simplified form. After I received my new passport I went on the HiKorea site and registered the new number with immigration. It took about 2 days to go through and was pretty simple. |
