So Marvel Comics will introduce a female Muslim superhero who can fly.

Which is handy, since she's not allowed to drive.

Don't they understand that having only one female Muslim superhero is tokenism? Until female Muslim superheroes are represented in direct proportion to their share of global demographics, we still have a long way to go before we have real equality.

Joking aside, I am sure this will provide some tiny number of people actual entertainment and some larger number of people a chance to feel "tolerant" and "progressive" by pretending to care, so maybe they'll actually turn a profit for a short time before the gimmick gets old.

It might be half way decent because they have someone with the same background writing it, but the addition of superpowers seems superfluous. The comics by the Iranian girl that dealt with the sorts of issues it seems like this would was not bad, but of course that was about her life and not about a superhero.

Now now, don't blame me. Replace "female Muslim superhero" with "female fortune 500 CEO" or "female legislator" or the like and that's an argument which actually gets made. The joke almost makes itself.

I've never read it, but it looks interesting, far more interesting than transmuting a western superhero into a Pakistani Muslim woman for the sake of "diversity." I'm downloading it now.

I believe Slate or Salon (does it matter?) published an article about how science has a "female problem" b/c so few Nobel prizes have been awarded to women.

In twenty years all Nobel prizes will be awarded to homosexual, transsexual, black, disabled people. And we still wont have our flying cars.

For those interested in getting some super powers:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2508032/New-Scientology-building-Florida-floor-members-super-powers.html

Quote:
Ten thousand scientologists are expected to descend on Clearwater, Florida this weekend for the grand opening of a 'cathedral' which has been under construction for 15 years.

The $145million Flag Building is a massive seven-story, 377,000-square-foot complex and the tallest building in Clearwater, which is the 'spiritual headquarters' of the 59-year-old religion.

The opening of the building on Sunday will mark the first time Scientologists have had a space to receive 'Super Power' training - a program developed by the religion's founder L Ron Hubbard in the 1970s.

How cool is this? And it's in Florida, too!
