Quote:
(CNN) -- The South Korean girls group Girls' Generation beat the likes of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and its compatriot Psy to win the top award for video of the year at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards.
The K-pop group, which is one of Asia's biggest musical acts, won for the video "I Got a Boy."

While massively popular in Asia, the reaction to its win from the American audience was muted -- with scattered applause, but mostly a long, deafening silence.

While Girls' Generation may be unknown to an American audience, the pop group is a national phenomenon in Korea. The group's record releases are a national event with every news outlet running stories and inciting fans to near-hysteria.

What do you think, guys? Was this your favorite video this year?

The bolded part could be said for just about every group that puts an album out here, or at least it seems like it.

No, it is not the best (music) video IMHO.

Though not nominated, I think this is the best video.

while their zeal can be downright stalkerish and over the top i have to hand it to the rok netizens.

i saw a funny comment on that youtube video saying that the people who were complaining about girls generation winning were the ones who were too lazy to support and vote for their own group of choice. ironically true.

It's not the voters fault if the election procedure is flawed. Laughing

Is two-time election of Barack Obama fault of American voters? No, the election procedure has flaws. Laughing

I guess the South Korean entertainment companies bribed Google. Confused But then again, pop songs are usually soul-less.

The solution is simple- People from Asia should count as 3/5th of a vote.

FYI- It wasn't just K-netizens, it was Asian netizens.

The most important thing to know is that U.S. audiences are still largely unaware of K-pop and its artists, excluding Psy. Also it seems that there is emotional resistance against imported culture, especially from a developing nation like Korea.

Describing the moment of winning the award in a crowded auditorium in New York, CNN reported, “While massively popular in Asia, the reaction to its win from the American audience was muted — with scattered applause, but mostly a long, deafening silence.”

Many viewers of the ceremony, which was streamed live online, were upset with what they called a “rude” reaction, one of whom said “That’s the worst problem I guess for people in the United States... being ethnocentric.”

Some viewers assailed the group with racist commentaries. “The question is why is Girls’ Generation in America if they can’t speak a word of English lolllooololl,” an unidentified individual complained on Tweeter, referring to the award-winning song, whose lyrics are all in Korean save a couple of English words.

Quote:
All of them are extremely offensive and racist to look at. But there are arguments among music experts in Korea that that’s the reality Girls’ Generation and other K-pop musicians might face while making inroads into the U.S.

“Every society has a certain level of bigotry. America is no exception,” a music critic here said. “K-pop musicians should not back down. What they need to do is come up with a breakthrough.”

Screw Justin Bleeper, Dummie Lovato, and Just-sin Timberlake!... Here are a couple more articles on this important pop culture topic:

Of course, they would have tougher competition if I started putting my karaoke vids on YouTube:

(I got about 600 of 'em since I started doing online karaoke in Korea...)

It doesn't sound like Simon and Martina were very impressed with the song. They point out that aegyo (the cute, helpless, "oppa" stuff) and hip hop don't go very well together. But they did like some of the dance moves.
