McCain isn't really wrong but he's not really countering Putin's arguments. He says Russia supports tyrants around the world, but suggest the US does not. He is either lying or believes in the very myth Putin was suggesting (the whole exceptionalism debate). Most of the US's allies in the Middle East are dictators. Some, like Saudi, are very oppressive, treat women like second class citizens, imprison gays, use torture, support fundamentalist Islam, oppress minorities and have no religious freedom. And these are the guys that the West thinks will turn Syria into a democracy with their support for the rebels.
Saying Putin denies equal rights for gays is correct but ignores the whole debate about gay marriage in the US and the not to distant in the past don't ask don't tell policy in the military. In Russia it is not illegal to be gay, you can't have a pride parade or other such events. Kind of like a bigger version of don't ask don't tell.
So McCain is right, but he didn't really show why Putin was wrong. |

By-passing the Romanov restoration talk, a few days ago it was announced that Syrian chemical warfare materials have begun to be destroyed.
That's a good thing. A very good thing.
If Putin won himself a Nobel Peace Prize into the bargain, so be it. |

He won't. It isn't really a 'peace prize'. It is a liberal prize. The EU won last, plus Obama, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Al Gore, Martti Ahtisaari (for creating a muslim state in Europe), Liu Xiaobo (nothing related to peace what so ever), Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee,
Tawakel Karman won for being women who worked for "women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work" (meaning nothing), Yunus for bringing usury to the third world. ElBaradei's prize could be defended.
Putin will win it right after I do. |

I'm not sure it's really moved anywhere.
It doesn't change anything about the reality of the Ukrainian crisis, though. |
