I've been to the doctor more times in 2013 than the rest of my life combined. That alone has made it worth it to me, since I'm an American.

The most important thing to remember, and this holds true regardless of where you are, is to look at the glass as half-full instead of half-empty. Seoul has improved a lot and is one of the most underrated large cities in the world and Koreans can often be some of the genuinely nicest people you'll meet anywhere. We're living in a good place at a good time, folks.

You don't have to be here. If you don't like it then why stay around? I don't mean this like, "Hey you don't like America?? LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!" I just mean that it's not for everyone and there's no point sticking around if you're unhappy. IMO start learning Korean, even if you can't speak it, at least learn how to read it.

I wouldn't say that I am unhappy. Far from it. Just having difficulties adapting, much more than I was anticipating. Most days I feel fine but I do admit that on occasion I keep questioning the decision to come here.

I am studying Korean and can read the very basics but it is not as helpful as I imagined. To progress to a point where I can read documents and engage in casual conversation is not feasible at this point (time, money, learning ability).

You need hobbies dude! that is what gets a lot of people through living here. Well that or a gf/bf. lol

But definitely dont go the alcohol route and just drink problems away. Most of the expats who live where I do and are less than stellar in actions and intelligence are usually the ones who are seen plastered out the local family mart or mart weekly and sometimes even daily. I study muay thai kick boxing and before that I was studying Karate here. It has helped immensely with my physical and mental state. Also go for a weekend getaway with friends or even by yourself once in a while. A little alone time away from the city can do wonders for your mental state. Also travel to Japan or another country on your vacation time will get you away from Korea and ease your mind.

If so when did this phase start and stop for you?

Most days I feel content and just go about my daily routine. But certain days I ask myself, why? Why am I here? Away from everyone I know and love, from my familiar surroundings, to a country where I know no one. Where even doing the simplest tasks - like banking and visiting the pharmacy seems like a significant hurdle. Like I am just floating around in purgatory for the time being. Awaiting to go back home. I just become so overwhelmed with anxiety on these days, I just breakdown mentally and physically.

But as I mentioned, most days I feel happy and content doing what I do. But about 2 or 3 days a month I get these stressful days. They just hit me out of nowhere. How did you guys combat this? Thanks.

I'd say grow a pair.

On Dave's? Yes. Every single time I come back to this pack of haters, apologists and trolls I question why I bother anymore.

Drink, meet girls, and have sex with as many of those girls as possible. This will change your attitude.

+1. A nice bed mate cures most things.
