|
|
"The 32 year-old instructor regularly sexually assaulted the girls between 2010 and July 2013, the Education Ministry said in a statement Wednesday that revealed the results of a special inspection.
In light of the incident, the school held a 30-minute internal meeting in which they decided to handle the case by asking the teacher to apologize, forgoing further investigation.
School officials neglected to make a record of their discussions or of the meeting.
The school’s nurse – who was responsible for counseling students and providing health education – also allegedly conducted a group counseling session that only lasted 16 minutes. The ministry noted that the nurse tried to convince the victims that the sexual advances were gestures of encouragement and support."

Gestures of encouragement and support? Unbelievable. It reminds me of what happened in Gwangju at a school for deaf students. I remember there was a lot of controversy about that case because the perpetrators got off with very light sentences. |

If you read the article it seems awfully sleazy, yet well-organized. The school employees seemed to understand exactly how to cover up the dirty deed. They knew their roles all too well. It makes you wonder if they've been through it before or if there are some experts out there that filled them in on how to cover it all up. |

It sounds like some of the people who participated in the cover up could have their salary cut, be suspended, or terminated. This all happened over a period of three years so it makes one wonder how many people knew about it but did nothing to help the victims. In the US, you could be criminally liable for failure to report child abuse to the proper authorities. Criminal charges have been filed against the Penn State officials who did nothing when they had reason to believe that a football coach was sexually abusing minors. |

The MOE appears to be taking it seriously, which is a move in the right direction. Once the schools realize cover-ups will no longer be tolerated, they won't be so ready to sweep these types of abuses under the rug. |

I'm hoping that because Korea has its first female prez, that she really does something about the horrible sexual abuse going on in this country with seeming impunity. |
