|
|
I am going to buy an expensive ($3000) watch overseas and bring it to Korea on my wrist. I reviewed the Korea customs website, and it made me really confused about what I need to declare.
- is it legal to bring it as a personal possession without declaring? I failed to find the exact rule regarding that on customs website.
- will I need to declare it every time I go out of Korea to safely bring it back later?
Thanks~ |

More money than sense!
Just use your phone.
Who needs a watch these days?!
To answer your question, don't declare it. It's 'used' and it's yours!
No need! |

if you've never had a nice watch how could you possibly comment? more empty assumptions than sense!
i've had many situations where my phone was dead and i've had to depend on my watch. especially when i'm traveling.
and to actually answer the op's question, as far as i know you don't have to declare anything to customs unless you are bringing in a new item and you avoided paying duty on it (duty free shops, importing items, etc.) over a certain limit.
that's why i can stuff my luggage full of bottles of booze but if i buy it at duty free i'm only allowed to legally carry in one bottle before i have to declare to customs and pay duty on other bottles. |

I've always made do with my (fake) casio watch with plastic strap when I'm traveling '3rd world' countries.
Heard too many stories of white guys buying a fake Rolex for w10,000 and then getting mugged one hour later by a local who sees a 'rich' white guy and a shiny watch.
OP if you've always wanted an expensive watch, fine go for it. |

Common sense should come in to play here. If you wear it on your wrist, they're not going to nail you with a customs fee. |

Just walk through customs without batting an eye.
The customs people are on the look out for rich looking Koreans, not foreigners. |

Declaring the watch will be a waste of your time, the time that it takes for agents to realize it's your personal watch and let you go. |

Agreed. Simply put it up your anus and walk through customs normally. Chances are they won't make such a dedicated search. I've done this several times (approximately 10-12x), and it's definitely worth putting it in your anus rather than them finding your watch/signet ring/gold nugget bracelet, etc, and either stealing it or making you pay a fine/taxes. There's a good chance that if you don't do this, then they might steal it and/or make an excuse about you smuggling something and then keep it for themselves. Better safe than sorry. It's your call, but I think $2000 worth of gold and silver in the crap chute is better than a $2000 crap shoot loss. What do you guys think? It's also not a bad idea for you newbies to do the same with American dollars since they can easily be confiscated the same way. Better sore than sorry I say. |

Tears in my eyes from laughing so hard - nice Pulp Fiction reference.
Seriously, though you don't have to declare it, I would keep an eye on it if they make you put in the tub to send it through the airport security scanner. If possible, have a friend waiting on the other side so nobody nicks it, as my Brit friends might say. |

Literally did LOL. A $3000 for a watch for 'reliability'? negative.
Agreed with not declaring it. Unless you are dressed like a backpacker while rocking the bling. That might put up a red flag. |

your reading comprehension seems to be lacking. there was no mention of spending 3000 for a watch for reliability. there was a mention of using a watch when my phone battery died though.
i really hope you aren't a teacher with those reading skills. |
